Jurassic World Rebirth’s Rating Sticks to a Series Tradition

Before its summer premiere, the movie “Jurassic World Rebirth” has been given an official rating and it adheres to a long-standing tradition within the Jurassic Park franchise. According to the film’s rating on the Ratings website, “Jurassic World Rebirth” is rated PG-13, just like all other films in the series dating back to the original in 1993. Throughout its history, the Jurassic Park movies have included intense scenes that could potentially scare younger viewers, but they haven’t been violent enough to require an R rating. They fit perfectly into the “sweet spot” that Steven Spielberg, director of “Jurassic Park”, discussed when he suggested the creation of the PG-13 rating in the ’80s.

In simpler terms, “Jurassic World Rebirth” received a PG-13 rating due to its scenes of intense violence and action, graphic depictions of blood, some innuendo, language use, and a drug reference. While the previous films in the Jurassic World trilogy also had violent sequences, “Rebirth” is the first to feature bloody images. The original Jurassic Park series also earned their PG-13 ratings for their intense depictions of science fiction horror.

Gareth Edwards, director of Jurassic World: Dominion, has expressed his intent to return the series to its initial foundations. He’s honoring the original Jurassic Park by creating a narrative centered around survival, recapturing the atmosphere of that iconic ’90s film. The trailer for Jurassic World: Dominion emphasizes the horror aspects, displaying some of the scariest dinosaurs the franchise has ever featured.

This summer movie lineup, including “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” “Superman,” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (along with other popular titles), saw “Jurassic World Rebirth” crowned as the most eagerly awaited film in a Fandango survey. Despite the fact that previous Jurassic World films didn’t receive rave reviews from critics, they were all blockbuster hits, earning over $1 billion each at the box office.

Although some may anticipate a Jurassic World: Rebirth movie filled with dinosaur violence to be rated R, given its status as Universal’s major summer blockbuster, it was not surprising that the film would adhere to a PG-13 rating instead. This decision allows director Edwards and his team to attract the broadest possible audience while remaining true to the franchise’s essence. Even though the violence may not be as graphic as in a movie like John Wick, Jurassic World: Rebirth is expected to test the boundaries of the PG-13 rating. It’s important to note that a film can still provide intense thrills without being rated R.

It’s likely that the “dramatic episodes” in Jurassic World Rebirth will be unforgettable, laying the groundwork for even more thrilling scenes in upcoming installments. The revival of the iconic river raft sequence from the original Jurassic Park book is expected to be a key aspect of the film. Jurassic Park, one of cinema’s greatest blockbusters, continues to stand out due to its masterfully crafted sequences of sci-fi horror (the T-Rex escaping its enclosure and raptors in the kitchen) that demonstrated that a PG-13 rating could deliver plenty of summertime frights.
