Heed this notice: Plot twists for “Doctor Who” season 15, episode 4 titled “Lucky Day,” may reveal secrets. A character who made their initial appearance during David Tennant’s revival of “Doctor Who” in 2023 for the 60th-anniversary festivities was absent from the cast of season 14, but has fortunately rejoined the show now. The short tenure of the Fourteenth Doctor ushered in a new version of UNIT, replacing decades of characters that were temporary or interchangeable within this “Doctor Who” faction. The series’ Disney era has added a sense of continuity to this aspect of the “Doctor Who” universe, but one of the fresh faces didn’t appear during Ncuti Gatwa’s first stint as the Fifteenth Doctor.
In episode 4 of “Doctor Who” season 15 titled “Lucky Day,” the focus shifts from Ncuti Gatwa as The Fifteenth Doctor and Varada Sethu as Belinda Chanda, to make way for Millie Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday. This episode is centered around Ruby’s struggle to readjust to everyday life. As the story unfolds, it also brings back the organization UNIT, with Jemma Redgrave reprising her role as Kate Stewart, a character who had helped The Doctor at the end of season 14. Interestingly, “Lucky Day” also marks the return of a character who was absent during Sutekh’s resurrection.
After Skipping Doctor Who Season 14, Shirley Anne Bingham Returns In Season 15
Shirley was replaced by a new scientific advisor in season 14
In the opening and concluding episodes of the 60th-anniversary trilogy of Doctor Who, Ruth Madeley portrayed Shirley Bingham, who served as UNIT’s scientific advisor. She was a crucial member of Kate’s team in “The Star Beast” and “The Giggle.” However, when the Fourteenth Doctor returned to Earth during season 14, episode 7, titled “The Legend of Ruby Sunday,” Shirley was missing among her UNIT peers. Instead, Morris Gibbons (played by Lenny Rush) stepped in as a temporary replacement for UNIT’s scientific advisor role.
In essence, while Morris temporarily replaces Shirley due to her absence, it’s been confirmed by showrunner Russell T. Davies that Madeley’s character was actually in Geneva during the timeframe. It is presumed she was at UNIT HQ for some reason necessitating her presence there. During Sutekh’s return, Morris effectively stands in for Shirley, but he eventually makes way for the return of Madeley’s character in “Lucky Day,” episode 4 of season 15 of Doctor Who.
In approximately the same period as Doctor Who season 14’s two-part finale, Madeley featured in an episode of Renegade Nell. This could suggest a clash in schedules as the likely reason why Shirley was absent from “The Legend of Ruby Sunday” and “Empire Death.” However, she reappears in “Lucky Day,” once again playing a significant role within the UNIT team at her initial post.
I Hope Shirley & Morris Gibbons Both Appear In Doctor Who’s UNIT Spinoff
The War Between the Land and Sea is coming in 2025
After the final episode of “Doctor Who” season 15 airs, a thrilling new spinoff series titled “The War Between the Land and Sea” is set to debut in 2025. The cast for this miniseries includes Ruth Madeley as Shirley, with Kate’s UNIT team expected to play a significant role in the storyline. As the Sea Devils make their return, it’s only fair that Morris, who gave an exceptional performance during his stint in “Doctor Who” season 14, doesn’t miss out on the action. I’m delighted to see Shirley back, but I can’t help but feel Lenny Rush’s absence would be noticeable after his impressive portrayal in the series.
It seems that “The War Between the Land and Sea” promises an intense battle, one where UNIT will need all the help they can get to thwart the Sea Devils. Given this high-stakes scenario, it would be beneficial to have the skills of both Shirley and Morris in the upcoming spinoff. Having two scientific advisors rather than one might not hurt, especially if it’s made clear that Shirley holds the senior position among the two characters from “Doctor Who”.
