It’s incredibly frustrating when a likable game is ruined by an annoying character. A single irritating personality can quickly spoil the fun, even in a fantastic game, particularly if that character appears often. Below, we’ve highlighted five examples, but there are many other characters who detract from otherwise great gaming experiences.
Here are five characters who ruined great games.
5) The Calypso Twins – Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 offers some of the most fun and engaging gameplay the series has ever seen. Combined with a really strong endgame experience, it had all the ingredients to be a huge hit, earning top sales and awards.
The characters and humor in Borderlands 3 are incredibly irritating. The non-player characters (NPCs) are among the most annoying you’ll encounter in a game, and the main villains, the Calpyso Twins, are particularly frustrating. It becomes so bothersome that it’s often better to play with the sound off and just focus on the gameplay of collecting loot.
4) Preston Garvey – Fallout 4

The base-building in Fallout 4 is pretty divisive. Some players absolutely love it and get completely lost in creating their perfect settlement, while others find it tedious but still end up spending a lot of time on it just to earn a trophy.
Preston Garvey is one of those characters who constantly asks you for help. As leader of the Minutemen, he’s always requesting you assist other settlements, aiming to rebuild the entire wasteland. While his goal is noble, Garvey can be overly insistent, making him feel less like a character and more like a quest-giving machine. This highlights some of the less engaging aspects of quest design in Fallout 4.
3) Meta Knight – Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Meta Knight stands out from the others on this list in a unique way. While most of these characters are simply irritating and make their games less enjoyable, Meta Knight achieves this effect in a different part of the game.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Meta Knight is notoriously strong. Playing against him is rarely enjoyable, especially if someone skilled is using him. A casual match might be okay, but a knowledgeable player with Meta Knight can quickly ruin the fun for everyone, leading to a unanimous decision to exclude him from future games.
2) Ashley Graham – Resident Evil 4

It’s worth noting that Ashley is significantly more helpful in the new version of Resident Evil 4. In the original game, she was a frustrating character – a classic ‘damsel in distress’ who needed constant protection and couldn’t really take care of herself, forcing players to constantly look after her.
Okay, so Resident Evil 4 isn’t quite my favorite story about a good-looking guy and the president’s daughter – that honor goes to Will Friedle’s My Date with the President’s Daughter from way back in ’99! But honestly, Ashley can be super frustrating in Resident Evil 4. I really have to give the developers credit for addressing a lot of those issues years later with the remake, because in the original, she was a real weak point in what was otherwise an amazing game.
1) Roman Bellic – Grand Theft Auto 4

Honestly, as much as I’m sure Roman Bellic means well, I really couldn’t stand him in Grand Theft Auto 4. He’d just constantly call and bug me to hang out, usually to go bowling or something. Look, I get it, he’s your cousin, but I bought this game to play it, not to be his personal chauffeur and activity partner! It just got really annoying after a while.
Roman constantly demands my attention, and he’s really bad at most things he attempts. It’s not just that he’s bothersome; he actually creates problems that I end up fixing. I understand the game needs a way to move the story along, but relying so heavily on Niko’s frustrating cousin just makes me dislike him more.
A lot of players probably want Navi from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to be considered the most annoying character, but Roman from Grand Theft Auto 4 really gets under my skin. He’s the absolute worst – or maybe the best – example of an irritating sidekick, and I always choose the ending where he meets his demise.
