Black Clover Spring Return Shocks Fans with Major Character Deaths

The comeback of Black Clover in Spring 2025 introduced some of the darkest turns yet within the manga narrative. The series transitioned into its concluding arc in 2022, moving to Jump GIGA shortly after, where every new seasonal release is met with immense anticipation from fans. Despite speculation surrounding Season 5 of the anime, there has been no official announcement, yet readers continue to immerse themselves in the upcoming adventures. Following the grueling battle during the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc, one would expect tranquility within the Clover Kingdom, but it didn’t last long. Soon after, Julius found himself possessed by Lucius Zogratis – the eldest brother among the Zogratis siblings and Julius’ twin.

Lucius is powerful individually, yet as the vessel for Astaroth, one of the three lords of the underworld, he becomes virtually invincible. His destructive acts have been prevalent within the Clover Kingdom, setting up the climactic battle between him and the formidable duo, Asta and Yuno. In a surprising turn of events before their return in spring, Asta and Yuno nearly defeated Lucius, but it was later revealed they were merely battling a clone of him. In Chapter 379, he unveils his hidden strength by announcing his connection to all Grimoire Towers. To showcase the full extent of his powers, Lucius commits an unexpected act by slaying three key characters initially introduced in the initial storyline of the series.

Black Clover Chapter 379 Kills Off Three Characters

In Black Clover Chapter 378, three significant characters – Gueldre Poizat, former Captain of the Purple Orca squad, Revchi Salik, a previous Magic Knight, and Marx Francios, advisor to the Wizard King – meet their demise. As Revchi and Gueldre desperately sought a means to endure the lethal conflict, Marx was being tended to by Mimosa. However, Lucius transports them, placing them before Asta and Yuno, and subsequently slays the trio with a single devastating blow. Upon their deaths, each mage’s grimoire, containing the spells they had meticulously honed throughout their lives, reverted to the Grimoire Tower. Since Lucius has forged a connection with the Grimoire Towers, he can now harness the abilities of deceased mages. To showcase his prowess, Lucius annihilates Gueldre, Revchi, and Marx in quick succession.

During the fight between Lucius and Yuno, we observe Lucius’ Chain magic binding Yuno after the grimoires of Revchi, Marx, and another character keep going back to the Grimore Tower. Lucius then uses Marx’s broadcasting magic to share this battle with everyone in the Clover Kingdom. Lucius seems convinced that this is their last stand, wanting everyone to witness their defeat. Although Gueldre, one of the minor characters, hasn’t used his Permeation magic yet, it looks like he might have perished too. The deaths of these characters, who have been in the story since the beginning, were quite surprising, to put it mildly. It seems likely that Lucius intentionally targeted these three for their unique abilities.

Revchi’s Tragic Life Is Often Overlooked

Initially portrayed as a renegade, Revchi was the initial magic knight presented in the series. He attempted to seize Yuno’s four-leaf clover grimoire, but met his match against Asta instead. Originally a skilled magic knight, he was betrayed by his own captain, leading to his expulsion after a failed mission and severe facial burns. A sinister plot ruined his promising future, leaving him with no other options but to embrace evil. In the Elf Reincarnation Arc, Revchi and Gueldre managed to escape their predicament together. Despite not being fundamentally wicked, Revchi’s path could have taken a more honorable turn in the future.

Gueldre’s Betrayal Was Disappointing, But He Didn’t Deserve a Cruel Fate

Gueldre was jailed and lost his position as Captain after betraying the Magic Knights by engaging in underhanded dealings to expand his business empire. However, he was imprisoned after being caught for these crimes. Although his offenses were severe, they did not warrant a capital punishment. He managed to escape from prison during the Elf Reincarnation Arc. Gueldre then teamed up with Revchi and vanquished an elf who had been causing havoc in the kingdom. Julius recognized Gueldre’s true capabilities, and instead of severely punishing him for his transgressions, the Wizard King assigned him to utilize his financial expertise to aid in rebuilding the kingdom.

Marx’s Bright Future Was Cut Short

Marx served in a prominent role as a Senior Magic Knight, standing alongside the Wizard King as one of his advisors. Since Julius led the Grey Deer squad, Marx has remained an ardent supporter of him. Marx held Julius in high esteem and was among the select few noblemen who respected common Magic Knights like Asta. His exceptional Memory and Communication magic were indispensable assets to the kingdom, capabilities that proved invaluable to the Wizard King. Given Julius’ strategic mindset, it comes as no shock that he desired a talent such as Marx’s for his own purposes.

In the closing sections of Chapter 380, there appears to be a shift towards better circumstances, but it’s clear we’re not yet free from danger. In the grand finale of Black Clover, these latest setbacks, compounded by the shocking occurrences on Judgment Day, underscore how relentless and merciless Lucius has become in his pursuit of supreme power. It now falls upon our heroes to safeguard what is left.
