In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts, Lewis Pullman’s character, Sentry, was unveiled as one of the universe’s mightiest beings. Equipped with flight, telekinesis, superhuman strength, and swiftness, Sentry boasts a versatile array of abilities in the MCU. Nonetheless, some powers from his comic book counterpart were omitted in the film adaptation.
In the storyline, Sentry stood out as the most formidable adversary for the main team of antiheroes. The role of Sentry was played by Lewis Pullman in a remarkable performance, who is also known from “Top Gun: Maverick”. Initially introduced as Robert Reynolds, Pullman’s character was portrayed as having powers that surpassed all the Avengers combined at his debut.
In the comic books, Sentry’s capabilities were portrayed quite dramatically and truly impressive. Yet, when he debuted in a live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe production (Thunderbolts), not all his astounding powers were fully showcased within the movie’s narrative.
All 8 Sentry Powers That Missed the Cut in Thunderbolts*
Invisibility
In numerous comic books, such as “The Sentry #1”, the character Robert Reynolds showcases the extraordinary ability of becoming invisible. He has the knack for controlling energy emissions and light beams, enabling him to either absorb, divert, or refract light so as to conceal himself from view.
Teleportation
Not only can Sentry transport himself short distances, but under specific conditions, his abilities extend far beyond Earth. He can teleport planetary distances and even traverse different realms! What’s more astounding is that he can alter his own molecular composition and warp the structure of space-time using cosmic energy at his command. This gives him the ability to travel almost instantly to any location he desires.
In these comics – specifically The Sentry #3, New Avengers #9, and Dark Avengers #12 – he exercised his power.
Absorbing and Manipulating Energy
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: Throughout my comics journey, I’ve come across the fascinating character known as Sentry. His unique ability allows him to harness energy radiation from various sources, with solar energy being his primary source, akin to DC’s Superman. This versatile power grants him the capability to unleash powerful blasts, fortify himself with force fields, and much more. Essentially, it’s his core power that underpins all of his other extraordinary abilities.
Telepathy
Sentry boasts a selection of telepathic talents, including mind-reading and psychic communication, which additionally safeguard him from mental assaults by others. In the comics, he employs these powers to conceal himself from public awareness, and he uses his psychokinetic skills to halt Mjolnir mid-flight after Thor throws the hammer at him.
Shapeshifting
In awe, I must say that when Sentry harnesses the power of the Void, it’s like watching a chameleon transform, but far more extraordinary. Unlike Mystique, who we’ll see again in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, Sentry doesn’t mimic others; instead, he alters his very essence – his matter and energy – turning into a shady, silhouette-esque figure adorned with tendrils. Remarkably, he can also adjust his size, expanding or shrinking on command.
Regeneration
Much like how Sentry possesses the power to transform into various forms, he boasts a remarkable regenerative capability that enables him to swiftly recover from injuries. Unlike characters such as Wolverine or Deadpool, Sentry’s unique trait is his absolute command over his entire molecular structure, which allows him to reappear and reform if enough of his body is missing or distorted when he gets injured.
Power Bestowal
Unlike numerous other superpowered individuals in the Marvel universe, Sentry possesses a unique ability: he can transfer his formidable powers to those around him, typically to safeguard his loved ones. This has been demonstrated with his own pet, Watchdog, and even characters such as the Hulk have received his powers in comics, as a means of protecting them from his darker persona, the Void.
In a manner reminiscent of the films “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Shazam”, Sentry possesses the ability to bestow powers upon others. This power sharing is particularly evident in comic books as a means to safeguard his dear ones, especially against his malevolent counterpart, The Void.
Molecular Manipulation
As a film critic, I’d put it this way: In the cinematic universe, Sentry possesses an extraordinary ability to alter molecular structures on command, transcending mere self-manipulation when transformed into The Void. This power has been demonstrated in breathtaking ways, from annihilating himself and fragments of Asgard, to metamorphosing objects into entirely different substances. However, it seems this versatile talent is underutilized compared to his other formidable skills.
