Richard Gadd’s New Series is a Proudly Scottish Effort

Richard Gadd hails from Scotland and is a comedian, but unlike legends such as Billy Connolly or Kevin Bridges, he doesn’t fit the mold of a rough-and-tumble, working-class humorist. Instead, at 35 years old, he comes from a middle-class background in a small village in Fife and leans more towards prop comedy, as evidenced by his critically acclaimed Netflix special, Baby Reindeer, which premiered in 2024.

Gadd has returned to Glasgow for filming his latest BBC series titled Half Man. This new project, according to Gadd, continues thematically from where Baby Reindeer ended, delving into the murky waters of complex human relationships. In this instance, the focus is on the strained bond between two brothers, portrayed by Gadd and Jamie Bell, who was previously known for his role in Billy Elliot.

Is “Half Man,” set in Scotland, distinctively a reflection of its author’s roots? Although it doesn’t make any overt comments about the country, its creator acknowledges that “Half Man” remains a deeply Scottish work.

Born and raised in a small village in rural Fife, on the southern side of the Firth of Tay, Gadd spent his early days. However, he’s been frequenting Glasgow since his university years when he began stand-up comedy. Despite being a native Scot, his accent isn’t as stereotypically Scottish as most Scots, he admits, using a gentle but not strongly Scottish dialect that has become recognized globally due to his fame.

Originally, when I first established comedy clubs around here, particularly those in Glasgow, they tended to be heavily steeped in Scottish themes. As I was the one dressed in formal attire and performing with various props, I often felt out of place or ill-suited in many aspects.

Was there ever a moment when Gadd considered altering his style to fit mainstream standards? He expresses, “I often fantasized about waking up one day and magically becoming a mainstream comedian.” However, he admits, “My unique sense of humor, the topics that amused me, and the way my comedy resonated were simply not in line with mainstream tastes.

I’m indeed proud of my Scottish heritage, for it nurtures an abundance of talent. Yet, it’s disappointing to see that many exceptional comedians and writers often remain overlooked. I believe this is truly unfortunate.

At a young age, Gadd departed from Fife and ventured first to Glasgow for his education, followed by London. His narrative in Baby Reindeer is based on the challenging experiences he encountered there. Interestingly, as part of his ambition to succeed as a stand-up comedian, he eventually returned to Edinburgh, hoping to conquer the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. One may wonder if this aspiring comic, whose more eccentric routines often fell flat or left people puzzled, truly thought that he would eventually achieve success?

In simpler terms, Gadd mentions that he didn’t have any predictions or psychic abilities. However, what he does possess is an unquenchable drive to work hard. Many people have noticed his dedication, and he believes that if he continuously pushes himself, grinds away, hustles tirelessly, and works diligently, then success will eventually follow.
