As of Monday, 5th May 2025, 10am: Electronic Arts (EA) has officially announced a certain number of job cuts at Codemasters without disclosing the exact figure.
In their communication to VGC, the publisher stated that they are consistently adapting to fulfill the expanding demands of their users and are intensifying efforts across all sectors of their business. This adjustment has prompted them to consider trimming certain positions, while at the same time, trying to reassign as many roles as feasible in line with their strategic objectives.
This update comes after it was announced last week that the development of rally racing games by Codemasters has been temporarily halted (further details to follow).
It was also announced last week that there could be significant job losses throughout Electronic Arts (EA) as a whole, and it appears that some of these layoffs may affect employees at Codemasters, with estimates suggesting that between 300 to 400 people might be affected.
According to an announcement on their official site, it seems that the pace of rally game development by Codemasters is decelerating.
The studio owned by EA has announced that they have “completed their journey” developing WRC, which seems to imply that their association with the official license for the game may be coming to an end.
Furthermore, post-launch support for EA Sports WRC has ceased.
Following its release in 2023, the game underwent multiple content upgrades, which included the 2024 season and the latest Hard Chargers add-on at no cost. Notably, this final DLC serves as the “closing chapter” for the rally title’s expansion.
It seems that Codemasters has decided to temporarily halt their plans for creating new rally games in the future. Consequently, we may not witness another installment in this series, at least not in the near future.
The game EA Sports WRC isn’t vanishing; instead, it will remain accessible for both existing and upcoming gamers.
Working with the WRC license marked a significant milestone in our Codemasters adventure with off-road racing, encompassing several decades of off-road racing games such as Colin McRae Rally and DiRT. We would like to express our gratitude to our dedicated fans for their continued support.
This announcement comes in the wake of major job cuts at EA, but it remains unclear if any employees at Codemasters are impacted by this.
Regardless of how you look at it, it’s quite unfortunate that Codemasters, renowned for creating some of the top-tier rally games over the years, now finds itself in a position where it must pause its rally game development.
As a gamer, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that our team gets another shot at it, regardless of the absence of the WRC license. We’ll just have to stay tuned and find out what unfolds.
