In the second installment of the ITV medical suspense series “Malpractice,” you can now watch all episodes online. As before, it delves into an intricate plot where hidden truths surface and startling actions come to light.

In the latest investigation by the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU), the lead role is taken up by Tom Hughes as Dr James Ford, who finds himself at odds with Dr Sophia Hernandez, portrayed by Selin Hizli, a fellow doctor specializing in obstetrics.

For viewers who’ve watched all the way up to the finale of the fifth episode, let me clarify the mysteries: What secrets did the MIU discover, and how did things turn out for James and Sophia in the end?

Malpractice season 2 ending explained: What did the MIU find?

In my observation, as Sophia and James collaborated in their investigation, it has come to light that a surprising commonality in the cases we’ve been examining points to the senior figures within our trust, specifically Eric Sawers, being the culprits.

As a film enthusiast, I uncovered some troubling behind-the-scenes facts about a movie studio. Previously, it was teetering on the edge of financial ruin, and their maternity ward, unfortunately, had been rated below par due to numerous complications during deliveries.

Initially, Eric Sawers and Arun Mansoor took over the unit and showed improvement, but in reality, they fostered an environment marked by fear, intimidation, and concealment. This climate made it difficult to document significant incidents, leading the trust to underreport serious incident cases to the government.

In simpler terms, they offered families compensation instead of taking legal action, although less than what they’d receive in court, and significantly decreased cesarean section rates well below the national average to cut costs.

A surprising turn of events unfolded when George stumbled upon blueprints being drafted by an architecture firm where his girlfriend, Gina, was employed. These designs were for the renovation of the psychiatry department, with someone preparing a proposal to buy the unit and transform it into high-end apartments.

The trust was given more than six million pounds for renovating and revitalizing the psychiatric ward, some coming from government funds and the rest from generous contributions. However, despite this funding, no repairs were ever made, and the money remained unutilized.

Conversely, funds were allocated towards the maternity ward instead, which gradually led to the deterioration of the psychiatry unit due to lack of maintenance. This state of disrepair made it simpler to consider shutting down and selling off the psychiatry unit over time.

1) The sale was worth 32 million pounds and was given approval by the trust. At the same time, they conducted investigations into employees such as James, hoping that the Management Improvement Unit (MIU) would decide that the department required shutting down.

It turned out that Eric had a secret intention to gain financially from the sale and renovation project himself. Interestingly, the architectural company submitting the tender for the project was actually owned by his sister-in-law. They were hopeful they could stand to earn around £60 million from the development.

The funds will be directed towards a corporation that serves as the umbrella company for the business, which is jointly owned by Eric and his sibling.

In my humble opinion, as I reflect on the film we’ve just watched, it becomes evident that the entangled legal battle over the trust will drag on for quite some time, according to Norma and George’s conclusions. Notably, Eric, one of the main characters, found himself in handcuffs.

What happened to Maria?

In this scenario, Maria Carter served as the midwife during Rosie’s delivery. She expressed apprehensions about Rosie’s difficult birth and an excessive fear of contamination, yet found her concerns dismissed by Sophia, who was following instructions given by Arun.

In the fourth installment of the season, James visited Maria’s residence and discovered her apparently having taken her own life through an overdose. Yet, James suspected that she was silenced by the trust, not having died of her own volition.

Later on, it was discovered that she was reaching out to women who had undergone difficult childbirths at the hospital, and whose ordeals were downplayed in the records, with the blame for complications being placed upon them. Her intention was to aid these women in pursuing a lawsuit against the hospital.

The specific circumstances surrounding Maria’s overdose – whether it was an accident, suicide, or homicide – remain unclear. However, it is evident that the actions of the trust contributed significantly to her eventual demise.

What happened to James, Kate and Sophia?

At James’ hearing, he stated that if he’d had all the information about Rosie’s case, he would have reached different conclusions. However, he acknowledged that his actions concerning Felicity Templeton, who was found to have used drugs during a night out with him, were unpredictable and imprudent.

He maintained that the pressure from the probe was a significant factor, and respectfully requested that the committee consider it in their deliberations.

It was concluded that he neglected to ensure Rosie’s safety, and his ability to perform his profession was questionable, as demonstrated by Felicity’s situation. Yet, he wasn’t permanently banned from practicing.

Instead, he was barred from his position for a year, but could potentially resume it after a review at the end of that timeframe.

In the past, Eric had proposed a new job opportunity to Kate, who was in a clandestine relationship with him. However, later on, he reneged on his offer, citing that her involvement with James was deemed unacceptable.

In a different phrasing, Eric employed the prospect of a job as an incentive to make her comply with his demands, such as having James evaluated for commitment. Later on, he divulged their relationship to the MIU, resulting in her facing a review at the end of the season.

It appeared that her connection with James was definitely severed, as we were unable to determine if they had any further involvement.

Simultaneously, Sophia – who provided crucial testimony that bolstered the MIU’s case against Eric and the trust – was removed from the hospital staff due to her own involvement in misconduct. Aware that this might happen when she spoke up, she chose to do so because she believed the trust needed to be held responsible. She willingly gave up her career for this cause.
