Actress Isabela Merced has commended the HBO adaptation for introducing a significant alteration compared to its original video game counterpart. She further disclosed that she was initially unaware of the extent of her character’s involvement in the unfolding series.
During an interview, the actress who portrays Dina in “The Last of Us” shared her feelings about her role’s significance as she filmed the series. She expressed gratitude for having a larger role than anticipated and appreciated the decision to develop the romantic relationship between the characters more gradually, rather than immediately as it was in the game. She believes that they are being thoughtful in how they portray the Sapphic storyline, aiming for authenticity.
In the process of filming the series, Merced eventually acknowledged that her character Dina and Ellie had some adjustments compared to their video game versions. She explained, “I was given one episode at a time, so I was learning as I went along. I believe the writers intended to alter certain aspects during the transition from the game to the television show. Since Dina is essentially a clean slate and acts as a sort of blank canvas in many ways, they utilized her character to connect these changes.
In addition, Merced discussed how the character of Ellie was subtly modified in comparison to her representation in the second game of the series. “Ellie appeared extremely somber and melancholic in the second installment, but they aimed to reflect more of Ellie’s characteristics from the initial season and first game. Essentially, Ellie is portrayed as deeply traumatized and enraged, yet when Dina is present, she seems capable of rediscovering the happiness that she once experienced,” Merced explained.
“I’ll Help You” Merced Believes Ellie & Dina Are Helping Each Other Grieve
In a recent discussion, the actress who plays Dina in The Last of Us Season 2, Merced, expressed her thoughts about Ellie and Dina’s relationship. She believes that during difficult times, both characters rely on each other. “I believe Dina is helping Ellie cope with her grief, but at the same time, Ellie is helping Dina,” Merced stated. “Dina seems to be channeling her own grief and offering help to Ellie, much like a friend who always helps others before themselves, as I see Dina.
Merced openly discussed the genuine connection she felt with Bella Ramsey on set, which contributed to their authentic portrayal. However, due to their hectic schedule of rigorous physical training, they found it challenging to cultivate a bond during filming.
To be honest, I was extremely anxious. However, on the first day, we filmed the scene where Dina mocks Ellie’s Converse shoes during patrol. But I don’t believe that was the day my anxiety subsided. Instead, I think the day that eased my anxiety was during the camera test; it just felt perfectly suited.
New episodes of The Last of Us Season 2 are airing Sundays on HBO.
