Initially conceived as an action game during the PlayStation 2 era, Captain Blood faced numerous development hurdles and legal troubles. After more than two decades since its creation, it officially sees a release, having overcome these early obstacles.
Unfortunately, the wait has not been worth it. Not even close.
By contemporary measures, Captain Blood is critically deemed a chaotic and crude slasher, hindered by a combat system that fails to deliver an engaging or rewarding experience. In essence, the captain’s sword feels more like a limp spaghetti noodle in battle.
The game has a similar feel to the old God of War, with camera angles and dodge rolls controlled by the right stick. However, the action lacks the same intensity or comparison. Your weaponry, comprising basic sword combos, a limited-use blunderbuss, and grenades, seems incomplete and difficult to handle. Even the special finisher animations lack impact.
Enhancing more attack options slightly boosts the battle experience, yet it falls short of providing a satisfying feeling. Worse still, as new monotonous enemy types keep emerging in the game title, there’s no respite from the grinding.
In the process of unfolding, Captain Blood’s tale, which promises to be somewhat amusing due to its over-the-top pirate adventures, disappointingly falls flat due to some of the poorest audio mixing we’ve encountered in recent times. The dialogue, unfortunately, gets lost amidst excessively loud sound effects and a music track that repeats incessantly. Regrettably, adjusting the settings doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.
Despite the promising hint of a sincere, enjoyable project evident in Captain Blood’s appealing graphics and detailed settings, the game ultimately falls short due to its significant gameplay issues. The engaging visuals fail to compensate for these fundamental problems with the gameplay.
If you yearn deeply for action games from the early 2000s, there might be a faint chance you could find some fun in Captain Blood, however, it requires enduring laborious, insubstantial fight sequences and confounding sound quality problems that seem to have been overlooked.
