From performing death-defying stunts thousands of feet above ground to pushing his limits beneath the ocean waves, I’m right there with Tom Cruise, supporting him every step of the way in what could be his last hurrah in the Mission: Impossible series. Fresh footage from behind the scenes showcases an underwater sequence that is truly unique among his numerous risky feats for the movie.
Through his social media account, Tom Cruise offered a glimpse into The Final Reckoning, hinting at a sequence featuring his character, Ethan Hunt, performing underwater stunts. Cruise mentioned that he had spent over 40 years learning and filming underwater sequences in preparation for this scene, which was filmed inside a massive 8.5-million-litre water tank. He also expressed that this scene would help take their movie-making to a higher level.
In the thrilling underwater scene from the Mission: Impossible series, one of Tom Cruise’s most daring stunts, Cruise had to contend with oxygen issues that limited his use of specialized equipment to just 10 minutes at a time. This risked hypoxia as he stretched the limits of those brief periods. In an interview with Empire, Cruise explained, “I’m essentially inhaling carbon dioxide, which accumulates in the body and impacts the muscles.” Despite these physical constraints, Cruise underscored the need to deliver a convincing performance, stating, “You must overcome all of that while you’re performing, and stay focused.
Impossible movie is indeed his farewell to the franchise, he’s certainly going out in a thrilling manner. Not only did Cruise perform an underwater stunt where he risked suffocation, but also hung on for dear life during a scene where his character was dangling from the wing of a plane flying at 8,000 feet with no computer-generated imagery. Throughout the Mission: Impossible series, Cruise has often subjected himself to extreme physical challenges, and this is evident in the latest sequel, Dead Reckoning, which includes scenes of him speedflying, jumping off a cliff on a motorcycle, and engaging in intense confrontations with Esai Morales’ villain, Gabriel.
The storyline of “The Final Reckoning” picks up from where “Dead Reckoning” ended, following Ethan and his IMF team as they pursue the AI-controlled antagonist, the Entity, along with its representative, Gabriel. Directed by Christopher Mcquarrie, this action-packed extravaganza brings back several familiar faces such as Simon Pegg (Benji Dunn), Ving Rhames (Luther Stickell), Henry Czerny (Eugene Kittridge), Michelle Monaghan (Grace), Vanessa Kirby (Alanna Mitsopolis), Shea Whigham (Jason Briggs), Greg Tarzan Davis (Degas), Angela Bassett (Erika Sloane) and Pom Klementieff (Paris). In addition, it introduces new characters played by Hannah Waddingham from “Ted Lasso” and Nick Offerman from “The Last of Us“.
Will This Be the Last Mission: Impossible Movie?
Emphasizing that viewers should see the film for themselves to discover its secrets, it’s also worth mentioning that this production is said to have been made with an impressive budget of approximately $400 million.
The Final Reckoning opens in theaters on May 23, with .
