Spider-Man Fans HATE This New Character

It seems that the character Paul has become a universal dislike among Spider-Man and comic book fans alike, a feeling that hasn’t been seen in years. The intense, raw animosity towards Paul and his ideals is evident in every series where he appears. Fans have expressed their strong dislike for him during Zeb Wells’s run on Amazing Spider-Man, as well as Mary Jane’s solo Jackpot series, and most recently in the All-New Venom series. Not only is Paul disliked for his beliefs, but recent issues of All-New Venom suggest that he is also a foolish character.

Why is Paul So Hated?

Paul embodies one constant aspect: Marvel Editorial consistently denying Spider-Man a state of happiness. It’s common knowledge that superheroes are bound by strict storylines, even beyond the comic book world. These characters have been around for decades, and to maintain an ongoing narrative, there needs to be a solid foundation to build upon and expand from. The status quos of these heroes serve as timeless settings, providing a backdrop for thousands of stories that can span years and decades.

In simpler terms, Spider-Man, known for his global popularity, maintains a more stringent set of rules than most other superheroes due to Marvel’s desire to maintain control over their major revenue source. However, the approach they’ve adopted to keep Spider-Man ‘realistic’ has become a point of contention among fans. This portrayal typically involves keeping Spider-Man young, unmarried or in fleeting relationships, and frequently struggling with hardships. Over time, Marvel has devised numerous questionable or complex ways to keep Peter Parker single and troubled, but Paul’s storyline stands out as the one that infuriates fans the most.

In simpler terms, the character Paul is widely disliked due to his one-dimensional portrayal. His introduction and the plot involving Mary Jane and him being trapped in another dimension for four years seems forced and frustrating. The only notable characteristics of Paul are his affection towards MJ, his tech-savvy nature, and a recent sense of guilt about his part in destroying his original home, which has only been established in the last six issues of “All-New Venom.” Prior to that, he showed no remorse at all.

Fans dislike Paul not only for perpetually separating MJ and Peter, but because his primary function seems to be this very act. He’s like an impersonal barrier preventing fans from enjoying one of the most cherished comic relationships. He lacks a despicable character as he lacks a personality altogether. His innocuousness is frustratingly infuriating, as there was nothing about him to detest before now. However, that has changed recently.

Paul is the Dumbest Character in Fiction

In issue #6 of All-New Venom, we discover the reason behind MJ’s unbreakable bond with Venom. During the “Venom War” storyline, Venom briefly connected with Mary Jane and her Jackpot bracelet to bypass the restrictions on her powers, which were preventing her from manifesting useless or overly powerful abilities. Later in the plot, Venom was contaminated with a toxin that caused it to disintegrate, forcing it to escape into the sewers to avoid infecting Dylan. Meanwhile, the remnant of Venom within the bracelet continued to randomly alter MJ’s powers, each change becoming increasingly harmful. As her bracelet rolled an instant death power and she began to dissolve, Venom instinctively bonded with MJ, merging them together and saving both their lives. However, they now cannot be separated without causing irreparable damage at a cellular level.

Apart from the space-related concerns with MJ and Venom, the primary concern lies with Paul. His invention of a bracelet granting MJ random superpowers is questionable. The fact that this bracelet could potentially unleash an instant death ability is concerning. Why create such technology? What’s the purpose when it carries the risk of transforming its user into someone whose bones might invert? Designing tech with a chance for such a transformation is foolish, and Paul’s decision to program this technology with that risk is reckless. While MJ was unfortunate enough to receive supernatural bad luck, she shouldn’t have had the option to roll Glob powers into decaying skin in the first place! This invention seems haphazard at best, and potentially dangerous.

Paul created a device that holds the potential to lethally harm individuals under unfortunate circumstances; keep Spider-Man at a safe distance from it. The absurdity of such a creation leaves me elated, as I’ve long disliked him for his ideals. Now, with this revelation of his idiocy, we can redirect our disdain towards Paul’s sheer foolishness. Let us exploit this newfound flaw to the fullest extent. Let’s rejoice, for Paul has proven himself to be a fool!
