John Cena aims to depart WWE at year’s end, clutching the Undisputed WWE Championship, but there are hurdles to clear before achieving this goal. One formidable obstacle is The Viper, Randy Orton, and their encounter at Backlash was filled with unforeseen incidents. Orton managed to win the fight not once, but twice! Additionally, several referees were knocked down, and RKOs seemed to rain from everywhere within the ring. However, the most shocking event unfolded post-Cena’s victory, hinting that Cena may have begun his journey towards reversing his heel turn.
Initially, the contest unfolded along conventional lines, given that Orton and Cena are well-acquainted. However, an amusing initial exchange took place where Cena scratched Orton’s eyes, followed by Orton retaliating. The action began slowly at first, but there was a moment when the two mainstays exchanged chinlocks and sleeper holds, which piqued the audience’s curiosity about who would emerge victorious from that specific encounter.
After that incident, things took a turn for the chaotic. It started when Orton inadvertently knocked down the referee. Cena seized the opportunity but found himself on the receiving end of an RKO. Shortly afterwards, Orton pinned Cena for a count of four, yet the referee was too dazed to begin the count. Later, the referee was struck again, this time against the steel steps.
Later on, a different referee was introduced, only to be replaced when John Cena held the Championship. He aimed to knock out Randy Orton with it, but Orton evaded the attack, causing Cena to hit the referee instead. Orton managed to subdue Cena and pin him down for what appeared to be a count of ten. However, the match came to a halt when the referee didn’t respond. In quick succession, several WWE officials, including General Manager Nick Aldis, rushed out to revive the referee and restart the bout, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
It’s clear that Orton became furious with what happened, and as the game seemed lost, he exploded, striking everyone in the ring with an RKO, including Aldis. Later on, Cena managed to stand up and retaliated with a low blow against Orton, eventually knocking him out to secure the victory. Despite Orton winning the match several times, Cena remains the Champion.
The triumphant celebration of Cena following his victory marked the end of Backlash. However, soon after, the cameras focused on Cena within the ring, where he was engulfed in a mix of cheers and jeers from the audience. He merely listened, then exited the ring, clutching the Title. It was at this moment that one could clearly see Cena appearing somewhat disheartened by how events unfolded, and as the crowd began to chant “Thank you Cena,” he seemed to grow emotional standing near the ring.
As a passionate moviegoer, I can’t help but draw parallels from the wrestling ring to the silver screen. In that electrifying moment, Cena paused, deeply absorbed, before walking away from the ring at a pace that echoed a slow-motion exit in a dramatic movie scene. His demeanor, which had been brimming with cocky confidence earlier during the bout, now seemed tainted with shame. It was as if the stage was being set for a transformation, a shift from villain to hero, marking perhaps the twilight of this heel era and the dawn of his babyface turn.
