With id Software about to unveil “DOOM: The Dark Ages” for all, an artist from their team has shared a collection of images on his personal website, potentially offering a glimpse into what DOOM 4: Hell on Earth’s original design could have been. Additionally, the artist, Thao Le, has posted screenshots hinting at an early modernized reinterpretation of the classic game Quake.
As stated on Le’s website, the screenshots showcase settings and models that were utilized directly within id Software’s idTech 5 engine, and they lack certain game elements such as radiosity rendering. Le explains that some of these scenes were crafted by combining assets from DOOM with original ones. The central concept for these scenes, according to Le, is a contemporary reinterpretation of the Quake environment.
Le describes two distinct sections on the website,” Le says. “The first area features a strange fusion of stone and ancient machinery, where gears and chains move to create a dynamic environment suitable for gameplay. The second section showcases mysterious stone structures that seem to float or animate, causing the environments to change during combat.
In reference to the upcoming game “DOOM 4: Hell on Earth“, Le has explained that the main themes for his work on the game’s settings are centered around a “decayed” and “ruined” cityscape. The images shown, which you can view here, were constructed using idTech 4; however, advanced rendering techniques such as PBR or Substance are yet to be incorporated.
On his website, it is stated that Le has been part of the gaming industry since 2001. He began his career at Lucas Arts, where he contributed to projects such as ‘Gladius’ and ‘Star Fighter 2’. In 2004, he transferred to EA Los Angeles, working on various titles including ‘Medal of Honor’, a canceled project named ‘Tiberium’, a ‘Lord of the Rings’ game, and ‘Golden Eye’.
From 2008 onwards, Le has been a part of id Software’s team. Initially, he contributed as an artist for the aborted “DOOM 4: Hell on Earth” project. Later, he also lent his skills to other shooters produced by the studio, such as both versions of “Rage”, “DOOM (2016)”, and more recently, “Quake Champions”. It’s worth noting that Le does not seem to have included newer games like “DOOM Eternal” or the upcoming “DOOM: The Dark Ages” in his list of projects he has worked on.
Previously, team members at id Software have shared many insights regarding the now-cancelled project, DOOM 4. In light of the launch of DOOM (2016), designer Kevin Cloud discussed the abandoned work, describing it as having a narrative focus rather than fitting well within the established DOOM franchise. He stated that they pursued an approach and reached a certain stage, only to feel that this direction was not embodying what they believed would make for a powerful DOOM game or what fans would expect from it.
Lately, I’ve stumbled upon some old, never-before-seen gameplay footage of a game that was once shelved, thanks to the efforts of id Software and documentary-maker Noclip. They’re working hard to ensure this lost gem doesn’t fade into obscurity.
