As a fan, I’m excited about James Gunn’s vision for a more interconnected DC Universe, with movies and shows sharing the same reality. It’s fascinating to see some former DC actors reprising their roles from previous projects, but Brec Bassinger from Stargirl has expressed a desire to switch sides and play a villain instead. She hasn’t specified which villain she might choose yet, but I can only imagine it would add an intriguing twist to our understanding of the DC Universe. Before we see that, however, you can catch Brec Bassinger in Final Destination: Bloodlines, hitting theaters on May 16th.
When ComicBook inquired about a possible DC comeback, Bassinger expressed, “I have a soft spot for superheroes. Playing Stargirl was truly an exceptional experience. She’s such a beacon of light. It could be intriguing to switch things up and portray a villain with a darker side. Absolutely, I’ll visualize that happening for certain.” Asked about a specific villain role, Bassinger hinted, “I prefer not to limit myself. I’d rather keep my possibilities wide open.
The complexity of the TV shows set in DC over the past few years is more than just a simple observation, and Stargirl is no different from this trend. Starting in 2012, The CW introduced Arrow, which marked the beginning of the “Arrowverse” of interlinked series, comprising The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. However, in 2013, Man of Steel was released in cinemas, presenting a distinctly darker interpretation of DC characters.
For several years, the grand cinematic universe of DC Extended Universe coexisted with the Arrowverse, but matters became more intricate in 2018 when the streaming platform DC Universe was introduced. This platform housed shows like Titans, Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, and Stargirl exclusively. Sadly, Swamp Thing was cancelled after just one season, while Titans and Doom Patrol moved to HBO Max, with Stargirl finding a new home on The CW. In the early part of 2021, DC Universe underwent a transformation, becoming DC Universe Infinite, which now serves as an exclusive library for DC books. All original programming, however, shifted to other platforms.
Stargirl aired for three consecutive seasons, but unfortunately seemed to be another show that didn’t quite hit the mark for Warner Bros. and DC, who were striving to revitalize their storytelling efforts following the lackluster reception of their previous cinematic ventures among viewers.
While waiting for Bassinger’s potential DC return, you can check out Final Destination Bloodlines.
