EA is Pushing for Return to Office for Employees, Will Gradually Phase Out Offsite Roles

Since major companies worldwide started allowing remote work due to global lockdowns caused by COVID-19 in 2020, EA appears to be encouraging its staff to go back to the office. As reported by IGN, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson sent an email requesting employees return, and he also clarified that a ‘hybrid work’ model would now mean that workers should physically be at their local offices for at least three days each week.

As per Wilson’s email, returning employees to the office is expected to generate a dynamic energy that boosts creativity, innovation, and interaction, frequently leading to surprising discoveries and exceptional player experiences. Additionally, Wilson mentioned in the email that the company aims to eliminate entirely the “remote local positions” over time.

Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, shared additional information about EA’s remote work strategy in a subsequent email. She explained that the transition back to the office won’t happen right away. Instead, Miele stated that employees should carry on working according to their Business Unit’s instructions until further notice. Moreover, Miele mentioned that employees will receive a 12-week heads up before any changes are implemented.

Concerning hybrid work arrangements, Miele mentioned that Electronic Arts (EA) is establishing a system for classifying employees based on their proximity to its offices. Employees residing within a 48 km/30 mile radius will be categorized as hybrid workers, while those living beyond this distance will be considered remote workers, unless their positions are specifically designated as On-Site or Hybrid. Essentially, EA is phasing out its Offsite Local work model over the next 3 to 24 months. Any exceptions to the work model or future remote hires will need approval from the CEO Direct, as Miele explained in her email.

Anonymously speaking to IGN, EA staff members have voiced worries about their job security, particularly those designated as remote workers under EA’s new policy and the potential phase-out of this program. Additionally, employees with lengthy commutes, as well as those unable to routinely travel to the office due to personal health issues or childcare responsibilities, have expressed concerns regarding EA’s renewed push for a return to the office.

In April, it was disclosed that Electronic Arts (EA) would be letting go of approximately 300 employees spread across different departments. The majority of these job losses were reported to have affected EA’s Experiences division, including customer support, marketing, and Fan Care teams. Additionally, Respawn Entertainment, a developer under EA, was also impacted by the cuts. Consequently, Respawn Entertainment announced the termination of two projects that were still in their early development stages.

Codemasters, a company known for creating racing games, has announced job cuts and a temporary halt on new projects related to rally racing simulations, including the cancellation of EA Sports WRC. In their statement, the studio explained that these actions are aimed at streamlining certain positions and reallocating resources to increase focus on their overall portfolio.
