Dwayne Johnson is a hugely popular and reliable actor, but even he couldn’t make the 2009 animated film Planet 51 a success. While he’s become known for starring in hit movies like Fast & Furious, Moana, Jumanji, and Stuntman, this early sci-fi comedy didn’t resonate with critics or audiences. Now, it’s available to stream for free, offering fans a chance to revisit one of his less successful roles.
The movie Planet 51, starring Dwayne Johnson and featuring voices like Justin Long and Jessica Biel, hasn’t been a critical or commercial success. It currently holds a low 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and only earned $105 at the box office despite costing $70 million to make. It’s one of the lowest-ranked films in Johnson’s career. As of January 1st, you can now watch it for free on Tubi. The story follows Captain Charles ‘Chuck’ Baker, an astronaut who discovers Planet 51 isn’t uninhabited as he thought – it’s populated by little green aliens who live like people in 1950s America and are terrified of humans.
Dwayne Johnson’s Planet 51 Is a Missed Opportunity
Critics weren’t impressed with Planet 51, describing it as boring and sleep-inducing. While audiences gave it a slightly better score, we think it’s somewhat better than the harsh reviews suggest. Ultimately, the biggest problem with Planet 51 is that it didn’t live up to its potential.
The movie starts with a clever idea – turning the typical alien invasion story on its head by making humans the invaders. However, despite this interesting twist, the film feels surprisingly predictable. It doesn’t offer anything new to the familiar ‘fish-out-of-water’ story and misses opportunities to explore the potential of its unique world. While it could have been a smart satire of 1950s sci-fi, it relies too much on childish humor and uninspired pop culture references that don’t appeal to anyone. The characters are also flat and lack depth. Although the animation is good and there are a few sweet moments, the film ultimately feels average and disappointing, failing to live up to the promise of its original concept.
Other Family-Friendly Movies Now on Tubi
Looking for affordable family movie nights? Tubi is a fantastic option! This January, they added several kid-approved films to their free streaming selection, including Planet 51, Bandslam, Earth to Echo, Jumanji, The Ant Bully, and Where The Wild Things Are. That gives families a lot of new, free movies to choose from.
