Quentin Tarantino is known for many successful films, including popular favorites like Pulp Fiction, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Reservoir Dogs, and Kill Bill – and that’s only a few examples. One of his movies, released as two parts, will soon be removed from Netflix at the end of the month.
Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight features a stellar cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Walton Goggins. The story follows bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) as he transports a dangerous fugitive (Leigh) to Red Rock, Wyoming. They soon cross paths with another bounty hunter (Jackson) and a man claiming to be a lawman. Seeking shelter from a severe blizzard, the group takes refuge at a remote mountain stopover. There, they encounter four more strangers, and the eight quickly realize that not everyone will survive the journey.
It’s Both Messy and Entertaining, as Most Tarantino Films Are
I recently watched The Hateful Eight, and honestly, it got pretty decent reviews – 74% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 77% from audiences. It’s exactly what you’d expect from Tarantino: really clever, snappy dialogue and a lot of intense action. It’s not his best work, definitely not up there with Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill, but it’s still a fun watch if you’re okay with a longer movie. One reviewer, John Brhel from Vague Visages, put it that way. But Josh Parham from Next Best Picture really loved it, giving it a 9 out of 10! He thought Tarantino did a great job making it feel both intimate, like a play, and visually exciting like a movie.
Most viewers seem to agree on their overall impression of the movie. One person rated it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars, describing it as a gripping, visually impressive Western thriller with clever writing, strong acting, and Tarantino’s trademark suspense. They noted it requires close attention, feeling almost like a detective story. However, another viewer gave it 2.5 stars, considering it one of Tarantino’s weaker films. They didn’t connect with the characters and only found the movie engaging in the final half hour, suggesting there are better options within Tarantino’s work and in the mystery genre.
The Hateful Eight leaves Netflix on January 25th.
