The last two episodes of Landman‘s second season feature a heartbreaking storyline for Cooper (Jacob Lofland). His journey takes a very difficult turn, leaving his future unclear and straining his connections with others.
The popular Paramount+ series features a harrowing scene where Cooper’s fiancée, Ariana (Paulina Chávez), is sexually assaulted. In the season 2 finale, it’s revealed that her attacker, Johnny (Mike Harkins) – the man Cooper previously fought – died of a heart attack. This leads to Cooper’s arrest and detention by the police.
Following Cooper’s arrest, Ariana contacted Rebecca (Kayla Wallace), a highly skilled lawyer, for assistance. Rebecca secured his release from jail, but the police continued to investigate Johnny’s death and intended to file charges. Cooper’s father, Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton), intervened and convinced the authorities to drop the case by threatening to reveal damaging information to the media.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, actor Johnny Lofland talked about filming the difficult scene where his character dies. He said it was one of the most challenging experiences of his career, both emotionally and physically. Because the scene involved a violent attack, Lofland felt a lot of pressure to portray it with sensitivity and ensure it wasn’t overly graphic. The entire team worked closely together to make the scene impactful but not exploitative.
It was a success! Lofland gave a believable performance. Although his character wasn’t a hero, the audience didn’t see him as a ruthless killer either. He came across as someone with weaknesses who was forced into a difficult situation and reacted impulsively.
The actor admitted he was nervous at first about filming such a demanding scene, but once he started, he fully immersed himself in the role of Cooper, seeing the situation through his character’s perspective. He described the experience as both incredibly surprising and unsettling.
Everyone was understandably anxious leading up to the scene. We were all wondering how we’d actually make it work and what the final result would be. The day of filming was incredibly intense – probably one of the most challenging days of my career. It required a lot of emotional preparation and letting go to fully immerse myself in the moment. It was a really powerful, though difficult, experience. We did have some stunt work to prepare for the physical aspects, but mostly we just allowed the scene to unfold naturally, and we captured something special that day.
The show also handled Ariana’s storyline with sensitivity. Chávez gave a powerful performance as a sexual assault survivor who chose not to involve the police, a sadly common reaction. Many survivors don’t report what happened for a variety of reasons – they may not want to relive the trauma by repeatedly discussing it, fear getting back at their attacker, or worry they won’t be believed or will face judgment from the authorities.
