Ponies Season 2 Update: Creators Confirm Planning For Next Installment

Be warned – the following contains spoilers for the Peacock series Ponies. Good news for fans of the spy thriller Ponies, which has been praised as similar to Apple TV+’s Slow Horses: a second season is in the works! The first season ended on a dramatic note, with CIA agents Bea Grant (Emilia Clarke) and Twila Hasbeck (Haley Lu Richardson) facing a dangerous situation – they were cornered at gunpoint by the KGB inside the American embassy in Moscow after Andrei Vasiliev managed to break free.

In an interview with Collider, the creators of Ponies, Susanna Fogel and David Iserson, revealed they are actively working on a second season, though Peacock hasn’t officially approved it yet. Here’s what they had to say:

Susanna Fogel: We would love it. We’re planning for one.

Yes, we’re working on it and trying to get everything in place. But to be honest, we’re not sure if or when it will happen.

I was really curious if the creators, Fogel and Iserson, had ever thought about a more conclusive ending, but apparently not! They always envisioned this as a long-running show, something they pitched to Peacock with plans for many seasons. And honestly, I’m thrilled to hear they’re already thinking about taking the story beyond Moscow and making it even bigger – a truly international scope sounds amazing!

We always envisioned this as a continuing TV series, something that wasn’t as popular for a while but is making a comeback now. We never thought of it as a one-time story. When we were casting, it was difficult to get well-known actors to commit to an open-ended show, so we told them it would be a six-month commitment. We shared the full story arc, planned for multiple seasons, with Peacock when we sold the show. The details have evolved, but we’re committed to keeping core elements of the original vision.

For us, the heart of the show is the friendship between these women, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable. As David mentioned, convincing actors to commit to a series for years – seven, twelve, or even more – means promising them it will be a worthwhile experience. And when it comes to keeping the show exciting, especially within the spy genre, we have lots of possibilities for future seasons. We’ve explored a lot with the Cold War and the KGB, so we’re now wondering where else we can take the story. Could we have an episode where the characters venture outside of Russia? With their new international assignments, that’s something we’ve been discussing as well.

Viewers can look forward to more romantic moments in season 2 of Ponies. The season will also explore Bea’s reaction to discovering her husband, Chris Grant (played by Louis Boyer), is actually still alive. Creator Fogel promises deeper explorations of shifting alliances and characters taking control of their lives.

As a movie and TV lover, what excites me most about this show is how much deeper the story gets. We started with a pretty straightforward premise – these women trying to figure out what happened to their husbands – but it quickly became about so much more. It’s really about these women finding their own power, discovering who they are, and forming these incredible connections with each other. And honestly, we’re not stopping there! We’re constantly twisting things around, adding layers of complexity, and keeping the audience guessing. We want to keep unraveling the mystery and exploring what these women are capable of, and it’s been a really fun ride so far.

Despite the confirmation that Chris is still alive, Iserson has shared the sad news that Twila’s husband, Tom Hasbeck (played by John Macmillan), has passed away. He specifically told Collider, “Tom is really dead.”

Bea and Twila both joined the CIA as undercover agents hoping to find out how their husbands really died. Initially, Twila was led to believe Tom was a spy for the KGB, but she and Bea have since discovered that Chris was the actual mole.

The season finale revealed several major twists that Bea and Twila will have to deal with if there’s a second season. First, though, they need to find a way to escape Andrei and the KGB. Despite the danger, it sounds like there will still be time for romance, as the showrunner hinted at more kissing in the future.

It’s still early days for the show Ponies, which just launched on Peacock less than a week ago, so it’s not yet clear if it will get another season. However, it’s currently the second most popular show on the platform, only behind The Traitors, which is a good sign for its future.

Critics are loving Ponies, giving it a 95% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s almost as high as the score for Slow Horses, which has been a hit for Apple TV with five seasons already released and a sixth on the way.
