Good news for romance lovers! Netflix is releasing a brand new series based on a popular book. Following the success of Bridgerton and the movie People We Meet on Vacation, this new adaptation has everything fans of the genre adore, and a special treat for those who loved Heated Rivalry: it’s set in the world of ice skating.
Based on Jennifer Iocapelli’s novel, Finding Her Edge tells the story of three sisters dealing with the weight of their family’s history. The story focuses on Adriana, a figure skater who’s trying to balance training with a new partner, Brayden, and her lingering feelings for her former partner and current rival, Freddie. Things get even more complicated when a suggested fake relationship with Brayden is proposed to attract sponsorships, all while she’s striving for an Olympic gold medal.
What Can We Expect from Finding Her Edge?
Jeff Norton, the executive producer and showrunner, told Teen Vogue that the show isn’t really about skating. He sees it as a story about people facing big changes and dealing with the complexities of life – things like first loves, finding true love, balancing responsibilities, family, and following their passions – all set against the backdrop of competitive figure skating.
Madelyn Keys, the lead actress who plays Adriana, describes the show as having characters who are imperfect but still likable. She believes that audiences can sense when actors are enjoying themselves, and that positive energy comes across on screen. She’s excited for viewers to experience the same joy she felt while filming, saying she hopes it will make them laugh a lot. Keys also shared that working on the show has given her a new respect for figure skating. While she feels actors and skaters share an understanding of performance and emotional connection, she can’t imagine doing it all on ice skates. She hadn’t seen a live figure skating performance before the show and realized that cameras don’t fully capture how incredibly fast the skaters actually are.
According to critic Anne Brodie, this eight-part series follows the girls as they come into their own, with occasional moments of defiance. While it feels like a typical Hallmark introduction to the characters, the actors deliver strong performances both on and off the ice. Overall, Finding Her Edge appears to be a charming and successful new offering for Netflix.
Finding Her Edge will premiere on Netflix on January 22nd.
