6 Years Later, Henry Cavill’s Sleeper Hit Thriller Quietly Becomes a Global Streaming Sensation

Most people probably recognize Henry Cavill as Superman from all those movies, and I definitely do! But I also really enjoyed his work as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher on Netflix – he was fantastic in that role too.

Even though he’s a well-known actor, some of Henry Cavill’s movies haven’t gotten as much attention—until now. His action thriller, Night Hunter, is currently a hit on streaming platforms, appearing in the Top 10 charts in several countries, according to data from FlixPatrol. The film also stars Ben Kingsley, Alexandra Daddario, and Stanley Tucci.

The action thriller Night Hunter reached number three in Argentina and Bolivia today. It continues to be a top 10 hit in Chile, Mexico, and Paraguay. Globally, the film was the third most-watched title on Paramount+ as of January 18th.

Okay, so I recently checked out this movie, and it’s a bit confusing because it actually premiered back in 2018 at the LA Film Festival under the name Nomis. But when it got a wider release in 2019, they changed the title to Night Hunter. It’s a detective thriller directed by David Raymond, and Henry Cavill plays Walter Marshall, a cop looking into a really strange case – a woman was found dead on a lumber truck, and things just get weirder from there.

Detective Marshall’s investigation takes an unexpected turn, linking up with an undercover operation targeting a child predator. This leads to further mysteries and complications. The film Night Hunter features Michael Cooper, played by Henry Cavill, a former judge who’s now a vigilante assisting in the sting. Alexandra Daddario co-stars as Rachel Chase, a police officer working on the case.

Night Hunter Received Mostly Negative Reviews from Critics

This shows that what critics say doesn’t always determine whether people enjoy a movie. Despite largely negative reviews, the Henry Cavill film Night Hunter is currently popular with streaming viewers. In fact, it only has a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on almost forty critic reviews.

Leslie Felperin of The Guardian rated the film two out of five stars, describing it as silly but admitting it’s somewhat enjoyable. However, she also noted a troubling element common in vigilante films: a potential glorification of sexual violence disguised as a pursuit of justice. Simon Abrams, writing for RogerEbert.com, stated that Night Hunter pushed the boundaries of what is considered acceptable in filmmaking.

Night Hunter received a 51% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While some viewers found the story lacking, and one review called it a disappointing thriller that didn’t utilize Henry Cavill’s talent well, the film still managed to attract an audience on streaming platforms.

IMDb users generally view the film favorably or with neutrality, often pointing out its good qualities even while acknowledging it’s not flawless. One reviewer said that if you enjoy movies similar to Silence of the Lambs and can accept its premise, you’ll likely enjoy it.

Despite not being a success in theaters and receiving poor reviews, Henry Cavill’s thriller, Night Hunter, is currently a popular choice on Paramount+, ranking among the top 10 most-watched movies in several countries.

Night Hunter is available to rent on Apple TV or Prime Video.
