Mamoru Oshii is a highly respected figure in the anime world, and his influence goes far beyond directing the famous film Ghost in the Shell. He’s also created adaptations of other popular series like Urusei Yatsura, Angel’s Egg, and Patlabor, among others. Oshii continues to be a busy director, with a new mecha anime recently announced. While Mobile Suit Gundam is often considered the leading series in this genre, another beloved anime classic is also making a comeback later this year.
A new Armored Trooper Votoms project, titled Die Graue Hexe (or The Gray Witch), is coming out later this year, directed by Mamoru Oshii. It’s part of the celebration for Sunrise’s 50th anniversary, and Production I.G. is collaborating on it. A new trailer and website have been released to build excitement. However, fans wanting to rewatch the original Armored Trooper Votoms anime will find it’s currently unavailable for legal streaming in North America, as it’s no longer on HIDIVE. Hopefully, the original series will become available somewhere around the time the new project is released.
What Are The Armored Trooper Votoms?

If you’re new to this classic robot anime series that began in 1983, here’s a quick overview: It follows Chirico Cuvie, an experienced soldier who gets caught up in a mission to steal secrets. He soon discovers the mission isn’t what it seems – it centers around a woman being held captive. Now a fugitive from his own army, Chirico must fight to uncover a conspiracy and learn the truth about the betrayal, the woman, and those who want to keep everything hidden.
It’s currently unknown whether the new Gray Witch project will continue the original series, be a complete restart, or take a different approach. The initial series ran for four seasons and included several animated shorts that expanded the story, creating a dedicated fanbase who fondly remember the Armored Troopers. While Mamoru Oshii is famous for his work on Ghost in the Shell, his experience with mech anime like Patlabor makes him well-suited for this robot-focused world. In addition to planning more content with the Armored Troopers in 2026, Sunrise is currently releasing episodes of the new Ronin Warriors and also has plans to develop a story based on the character Mao.
