IDW Addresses Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fate After Show’s Cancellation (Exclusive)

As a huge TMNT fan, I’m always excited to see the comics keep expanding the universe with fresh stories and new takes on everything we love. But when the Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon ended so suddenly, I was worried about what that meant for the comics too. Luckily, I recently read an interview with TMNT editor Jake Thomas on ComicBook, and he talked about how the cancellation impacts the Tales of the TMNT comic series, and it was really reassuring to hear his perspective.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics really matched the fun and energetic feel of the TV show, so we checked in with Thomas to see what was happening with the comic series now that the show has ended. He shared an exclusive preview of issue #5 and confirmed that the comics will continue even without the show!

Thomas praised Mikey Leavitt and Andrew Joustra for successfully capturing the youthful energy and heartwarming sibling dynamic of the original show in their comic adaptation. He also highlighted Louie Joyce’s ability to maintain the show’s distinct style and voice while adding his own creative touch. Additionally, Thomas mentioned that editor Ellen Boener has exciting plans to expand the story beyond what was seen on screen.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Is Set For Big Next Era

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is thriving right now! The comic books are more popular and diverse than ever, with stories happening in current times, based on the original cartoon, and exploring alternate universes. Plus, there are exciting team-ups with characters like Godzilla and the Power Rangers, individual series focusing on characters like Casey Jones and Shredder, and even future stories expanding on the world of The Last Ronin.

Although the animated Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series has ended, the comic books will continue. Fans can also look forward to a sequel to the 2023 hit movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is scheduled for release in 2027. In addition, Paramount is reportedly working on a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, and this is believed to be the reason the previously announced Last Ronin movie has been put on hold. The studio’s new management apparently prefers to launch their revamped Turtles franchise with a film that isn’t rated R.

Fans can look forward to a new Turtles game called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Empire City, offering both single-player and cooperative gameplay in a unique virtual reality experience. Plus, the Turtles are joining forces with the popular game Magic: The Gathering in an upcoming crossover event that’s launching soon.

As a huge Turtles fan, I’m telling you, even though we still have a few questions about what’s coming, the future of the franchise looks amazing! It’s really setting things up for a fantastic new era for all of us who love the Turtles.
