Runescape Is Getting a Massive Update 25 Years After It Released

It’s rare for a game to stay popular for as long as Runescape has, building a strong community and lasting impact on gaming culture. For almost three decades, Jagex’s online game has consistently grown and adapted, weathering changes in technology and player preferences. Now, Jagex is celebrating Runescape’s 25th anniversary with a major, ambitious new update.

Okay, so Jagex just dropped a huge plan for the future of RuneScape, and it sounds like they’re really going all-in on turning it into a proper, modern live service game. Basically, they’re revamping a ton of stuff – combat, how things look, how we level up, even player housing – pretty much everything! They’re saying they want to update the game without losing what makes RuneScape RuneScape, you know? The big reveal is going to be at RuneFest 2026, which is happening October 3rd and 4th. I’m really excited to see what they’ve been working on!

At the core of this plan is The Road to Restoration, a major update to the game’s fundamental systems. We’re addressing frequently requested improvements and making the game more consistent. Players can expect changes to the user interface, graphics, combat, and plugin support, as well as rebalancing and significant improvements to daily activities and the Guild Exchange.

A major update called the Player Avatar Refresh is underway. It will dramatically improve how player characters look, including their movements, hair, and clothes. Jagex says they’ll be using player feedback to make ongoing improvements to this project.

To help players feel more connected to their characters, RuneScape is significantly improving its housing system with the Welcome Home update. This includes more ways to customize your home, raising the maximum level for the Construction skill, and introducing a new recipe system. Players will be able to craft new furniture, much of which is themed around accomplishments and experiences within the game.

I’m seriously hyped for the Havenhythe expansion! It’s going to roll out in pieces throughout the year, and apparently it’s the biggest area they’ve ever added to RuneScape in its 25-year history. The whole thing is vampire-themed, which sounds awesome, and we’re getting new quests, bosses to fight, and even a boost to our Hunter skill. Of course, there’s going to be a ton of new story stuff too, which I can’t wait to dive into.

We’re excited to announce that Leagues II will return in Fall 2026! The first version of Leagues was incredibly popular in 2025, and we’re bringing it back with a lot of improvements. Expect new items to collect, things to do, challenges to overcome, and rewards to earn. We’re also making it easier and more fun to progress.

It’s rare for a game to remain popular for as long as RuneScape has. Maintaining a dedicated player base for years is impressive, but RuneScape has actually grown its audience – and that takes real dedication. Consistent, worthwhile updates are key to its continued success. Whether Jagex can keep up this momentum remains to be seen, but in a gaming landscape where many games are disappearing, RuneScape stands out as a major achievement.
