With the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved drawing near, Damon Conn and Max Szlagor, the executive producer and creative director at Halo Studios, have shared some insights into the game’s development and their vision for remaking the original Halo: Combat Evolved. In a recent GamesRadar interview, Conn and Szlagor explained their goal to appeal to both longtime Halo fans and new players alike.
This is happening because the new Halo: Campaign Evolved won’t have traditional competitive multiplayer. Instead, the game will center around its campaign, offering both a single-player experience and cooperative play for up to four players. It will also fully support cross-platform multiplayer, letting players on different systems play together. Plus, as the first Halo game ever released on PS5, it’s likely to introduce the series to a whole new audience of PlayStation gamers.
Conn explained that they’re aiming to connect longtime fans who’ve played for 25 years with a new wave of players. They recognize that some people may not have experienced Halo before, perhaps because they’ve always used PlayStation, switched consoles, or simply missed it when it first came out. The goal is to unite players from all backgrounds.
Szlagor emphasized that the Halo games are most enjoyable when a strong and active community supports them. He explained that building and revitalizing the Halo community is a key goal for growth and continued success.
Cronn explained that the game will both celebrate the history of Halo and introduce it to PlayStation players. He sees this as a way to broaden the Halo universe, and emphasized the team is taking the responsibility very seriously. “We’re aware of how important this is, and we’re committed to doing it right,” he said.
I still remember when Halo: Combat Evolved first came out in 2001! It was one of the games that launched the original Xbox, and later it came to PC too. It was a huge hit on both, and honestly, it basically built the whole Halo universe we know and love today – it really became a defining game for Xbox.
Okay, so I’m really hyped for the Halo: Combat Evolved remake! They haven’t announced when it’s coming out yet, but it’s being built for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The cool thing is Halo Studios is using Unreal Engine 5, so it’s going to look amazing. Not only are they completely overhauling the graphics and sound, but they’re adding three new missions! These missions will be a prequel of sorts, showing what Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson were up to before the original game’s story even started.
I was really curious about how Halo: Campaign Evolved differs from the original Halo: Combat Evolved, so I dug up 10 key differences. It’s also fascinating to hear what Marcus Lehto, a veteran developer who worked on the first Halo and even helped design Master Chief, thinks about Campaign Evolved.
