‘Could You Tell at the Time?’: Ex-Producer Defends BioWare’s Decision to Make ANTHEM

Okay, so Anthem definitely didn’t pan out – it was a pretty big flop for BioWare. But the executive producer actually thinks it wasn’t a mistake to make the game in the first place, even though it didn’t succeed. They’re saying they shouldn’t be written off for even trying, which is interesting to hear as a player who was really hoping it would be great.

Mark Darrah, a long-time employee of BioWare, recently explained that the company’s choice to develop ANTHEM was justified, pointing out that BioWare has always been known for taking creative risks.

I was checking out this really long, four-hour interview about Anthem, and it’s actually pretty interesting if you’ve got the time. One of the things the lead, Darrah, said really stuck with me. He basically explained that while EA definitely messed things up with Anthem and deserves a lot of the blame, it wasn’t entirely their fault. It’s good to hear some honesty about what went wrong.

He then responded to those who believed Anthem was destined to fail, stating, “BioWare has always evolved. If you apply that logic, we shouldn’t have created Neverwinter Nights because we started as a 2D RPG developer. Similarly, we shouldn’t have made Mass Effect because we were known for tactical RPGs, not action RPGs.”

Darrah admits ANTHEM was likely overly ambitious. However, he questions whether that was obvious at the time, saying he’s not sure anyone could have predicted its challenges.

It’s a unique perspective coming from someone heavily involved in the project. Most analyses of why ANTHEM didn’t succeed focus on BioWare’s lack of experience with games that are constantly updated and supported after release.

However, that’s just one perspective. Darrah’s recent interview explains several factors behind why Anthem wasn’t successful, but he believes the initial decision to create the game wasn’t necessarily wrong.

Now that things have calmed down with Anthem – yet again – what do you think of the game? Do you agree with Darrah’s take on what happened, or did BioWare struggle with the project from the beginning? Please keep the discussion civil in the comments!
