5 Best AAA Games We Never Got to Play

Creating top-tier video games, known as AAA titles, is incredibly expensive and time-consuming, often costing developers hundreds of millions of dollars. Because of this, publishers frequently announce games years before they’re actually released, creating excitement among fans. Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned, and sometimes these highly anticipated games are cancelled, leaving players disappointed. This happens fairly often due to problems with funding, staff changes, companies being bought, and other issues. Here are five AAA games that generated a lot of buzz but were ultimately never released, presented in a random order.

1) Star Wars 1313

Star Wars 1313 was a highly anticipated game revealed at E3 2012. It promised a grittier, more adult look at the criminal world of Coruscant’s underworld, specifically level 1313. Players would have controlled Boba Fett in a fast-paced, action-packed game similar to the Uncharted series. George Lucas was heavily involved in its development, and a significant amount of work had been completed. However, when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, Star Wars 1313 was unfortunately cancelled. While technically still on hold, it’s now unlikely the game will ever be finished and released.

2) Agent

Rockstar Games is a major video game developer, so any new game they create gets a lot of attention. They started working on a game called Agent in the 2000s and officially announced it in 2009. Set during the Cold War, Agent would have been a PlayStation 3 exclusive where players took on roles involving spying, political intrigue, and even assassination. Fans were excited, but the game never came out. While some details were revealed, Rockstar shifted focus to developing Grand Theft Auto 5, moving the Agent team to that project and eventually cancelling Agent completely.

3) Perfect Dark

Fans have been hoping for a fresh start to the Perfect Dark series for years, and it almost happened. Development began at Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative, with an announcement at the 2020 Game Awards. A gameplay trailer was even shown at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, exciting players. Sadly, the project was cancelled in 2025, and The Initiative ultimately closed after staff reductions. While this reboot is no longer happening, the Perfect Dark franchise isn’t necessarily over, but it may be a while before we see another game.

4) Whore of the Orient

Man, I remember hearing about Whore of the Orient and it sounded amazing. It was being made by the same team behind L.A. Noire right after they finished that game. The idea was to set it in Shanghai in 1936, a really turbulent time, and they were going to use that awesome facial capture tech from L.A. Noire, but seriously upgraded for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. They announced it back in 2012, aiming for a 2015 release, but sadly it got cancelled in 2016. Apparently, they just couldn’t get enough funding or a publisher to believe in it, which is a huge shame because it sounded like it could have been a massive, AAA title.

5) Star Wars: Project Ragtag

Project Ragtag was the working title for a planned Star Wars game, but the name may have changed during development. It started in 2013 with Electronic Arts publishing, and it had a talented team, including Amy Hennig, known for creating the Uncharted series, as the lead designer. The game was intended to take place after the events of A New Hope, and the developers considered making it an open-world experience. However, EA ultimately cancelled the project, highlighting a pattern of announcing Star Wars games prematurely.
