Steven Spielberg’s $607M Sci-Fi Movie Trends on Prime Video, 5 Months Before He Finally Returns to the Genre

Steven Spielberg is known for directing some of the most beloved science fiction films ever made, and he’s returning to the genre this summer with a new movie called Disclosure Day. As fans eagerly await the release, many are likely revisiting his classic sci-fi films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. – the Extra-Terrestrial, and Minority Report. With about five months still to go before Disclosure Day comes out, there’s plenty of time to plan a Spielberg movie marathon – and it looks like some Prime Video subscribers are already getting started!

Spielberg’s film Ready Player One is currently the ninth most popular movie on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S., according to data from FlixPatrol. It’s performing better than The Super Mario Bros. Movie, ranking higher on Prime Video’s list of top 10 films.

Ready Player One Is a Fun Sci-Fi Adventure Worth Watching on Prime Video

While not considered one of Steven Spielberg’s best films, Ready Player One is still a highly enjoyable sci-fi adventure. With a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s generally seen as a fun and nostalgic trip through pop culture. Spielberg was a perfect choice to direct, expertly adapting Ernest Cline’s novel and using his talent for big-budget filmmaking to create the immersive world of OASIS and thrilling action sequences. The film demonstrates that Spielberg remains a master of the genre, delivering a technically impressive and visually exciting experience.

One of the enjoyable things about Ready Player One is recognizing references to famous movies and franchises – it’s filled with nods to everything from Back to the Future to The Shining. These references aren’t just for fun; they also contribute to the story’s overall message. The film can be seen as a critique of how much our society loves pop culture. In Ready Player One, people use a virtual world called OASIS to escape their difficult real lives. While the story explores some thought-provoking ideas, it also received criticism, with some viewers finding it overly reliant on nostalgia and lacking substantial depth. Ultimately, Ready Player One is a movie that’s sure to be interesting and generate conversation.

While the story’s impact might differ for each viewer, the actors in Ready Player One make it a film worth seeing. Mark Rylance, who previously impressed audiences alongside Spielberg in Bridge of Spies, delivers another fantastic performance as James Halliday, the creator of the virtual world OASIS. Even though Halliday is deceased for most of the movie, Rylance brings a lot of warmth and feeling to the film, especially at the end. Ben Mendelsohn is also great as the villain, creating a truly compelling threat. Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke are both strong in the leading roles, and Cooke, in particular, makes it easy to cheer for their characters as they search for the hidden Easter egg.

Ernest Cline followed up his popular novel Ready Player One with Ready Player Two, which was released in 2020. A film adaptation is planned, with Steven Spielberg producing, though he won’t be directing. Development seems to have stalled recently. Given the first movie’s success – it earned $607.9 million globally on a $155-175 million budget – and strong streaming numbers, there’s definitely an audience for another trip to the OASIS. However, Ready Player Two received mostly negative reviews, so the film will likely need a significantly revised story to succeed.
