Scam Alert: Don’t Let Your Bank Account Be Stolen by Phony Texts!

Well folks, it’s that time again. Authorities over in a little town called Shelbyville, Tennessee, have decided to issue a warning to the good citizens of the area. Why? Because some sneaky crooks have been sending text messages pretending to be their local banks. Yes, really. As if we didn’t have enough to worry about.

The Shelbyville Police Department was quick to wave the red flag. Apparently, these scam texts have been flying through the community like a bad joke. It’s almost as if these criminals are auditioning for the role of ‘Most Annoying People’ of the year.

“Several citizens have reported receiving messages claiming to be from local banks, urging them to click a suspicious link. DO NOT click any links or provide personal information,” said the police. No surprise there, folks. It’s the same old trick—try to get you to spill your personal info so they can make a quick buck at your expense.

“These texts are not legitimate and are designed to steal your sensitive information. Below is an example of the text. If you receive one of these messages, delete it immediately and contact your bank directly if you have concerns,” the authorities add. Solid advice, but I bet you could’ve figured that out on your own, right?

But wait, there’s more. Over on Long Island, a similar con game has been playing out. Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine had to step up last month and warn everyone about a new crew of con artists that have been pretending to be bank representatives and calling up seniors. Oh, yes, because that’s always the target, right?

The fraudsters tell these poor folks that their accounts are in jeopardy and that their cards are suddenly malfunctioning (really? cards can malfunction now?). Then they make a big offer to come pick up the cards and—surprise, surprise—get the seniors to hand over their PIN numbers. It’s like the kind of scam you’d expect from a bad movie plot.

“And guess what? Then they go to the ATM machine and steal their money. And this happened to a number of seniors,” Romaine said. Well, who didn’t see that coming?
