While Scott Pilgrim EX builds on the gameplay of the 2010 game, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, its creators don’t consider it a typical beat ‘em up title.
This week on the TopMob Gaming podcast, we’re continuing our look ahead at the biggest games coming in 2026. We’re excited to share our exclusive interview with Ziva Reby, the community manager for Scott Pilgrim EX.
In the conversation, available as both text and video (you can watch it in the player above or on the TopMob Gaming YouTube channel), Reby discusses why EX doesn’t fit neatly into the typical “beat ’em up” genre.
Before discussing that, Reby shared that Bryan Lee O’Malley, the creator of the Scott Pilgrim comic series, has been closely involved in the project.
Reby mentioned at last summer’s Gamescom conference that Bryan has been part of the project from the very start.
He seemed eager to play a bigger role in the game, so he collaborated with our narrative designer, Yannick Belzil, to create a completely new story.
Reby hinted that the story will focus on Yannick and Brian collaborating to develop a new character called Metal Scott. Players will uncover the origins of Metal Scott through gameplay.
Scott is really excited about having a video game character based on himself. Ramona isn’t as thrilled, though, because the video game version of Scott, known as Metal Scott, has kidnapped everyone in the band Sex Bob-Omb, along with all their instruments. The band is supposed to perform tonight.

During the game demonstration, it became clear that it doesn’t follow all the traditional rules of beat ‘em up games, which actually suits the rebellious spirit of Scott Pilgrim. Sometimes, it even feels more like a role-playing game than a traditional fighter.
Reby clarified that while the game isn’t a typical role-playing game, it’s also more than just a classic beat ’em up like those Tribute Games is known for.
The game includes RPG elements, such as a shop where you can improve your character’s abilities. You can purchase badges and accessories to customize your playstyle and create a unique build.
Every character offers a distinct playstyle. Lucas Lee is a close-combat fighter, while Roxy is more agile and uses a katana, giving her a variety of ninja-like attacks.
This lets you create a character that’s tougher, faster, or has more health, depending on how you like to play. It adds a role-playing element where you can build a character to your preferred style, whether that’s taking a lot of damage or being quick and nimble.

Reby explained that the game features a main quest you follow, and while you can explore the map and revisit areas, you’re not required to always move in one direction.
Unlike traditional beat ’em ups, you won’t need to defeat every enemy to progress. We’ve blended elements of the genre with a different approach, aiming to create a game that both fans of beat ’em ups and new players will find enjoyable.
How does it feel to play this unique combination of elements? We enjoyed our time with it, and you’ll be able to experience it yourself when Scott Pilgrim EX releases on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2026.
You can read the full interview below, which also includes details about Anamanaguchi’s comeback!
