Although it probably won’t be shown at tomorrow’s Xbox Developer_Direct, The Coalition has been diligently developing the Gears of War: E-Day prequel, aiming for a release this year. They describe it as their most ambitious project to date, promising a return not just to the events of Emergence Day, but to the heart of the conflict.
Creative director Matt Searcy told GamesRadar+ that working on the game has been incredibly exciting because it allowed them to tell a story they were passionate about. Although the team drew inspiration from existing lore, they also had the freedom to introduce fresh ideas and elements.
Returning to the feel and atmosphere of the first Gears of War games, delving into the backstory of Emergence, and envisioning the chaos as monsters erupted from the ground provided a fantastic foundation for bringing back the Locust and their world. It was a great way to re-establish the characters and setting.
Although E-Day is a hugely important event in the game’s story, the narrative focuses on what happens in the city of Kalona over several days. The reason? To create a deeply emotional experience for players. As the developers explain, the story of E-Day is about the people of Sera and the global impact of the event, and setting the game in one city allows players to truly feel that impact.
According to Searcy, players will deeply connect with the city and experience a strong sense of loss for its history, its people, and their way of life. This challenging experience could add significant depth to the characters of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago.
The original Gears of War, now titled Gears of War: E-Day, is coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC. Last year, Gears of War: Reloaded brought the series to PlayStation 5, but it’s currently unclear if the first game will also be released on PS5, either at first or later on. The developers haven’t yet announced details about multiplayer, though they’ve hinted that it might be included.
What’s really interesting is that The Coalition doesn’t see this as a side story, but as a game that will heavily influence where the franchise goes next. Technically, it looks impressive, featuring advanced ray tracing, incredibly detailed destruction, and characters and environments with over 100 times the detail of Gears 5.
