Every Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Movie, Ranked (Including Their New Hit Netflix Thriller Hit)

Few Hollywood friendships are as well-known as the one between Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. They’re both major stars, but their bond is almost as famous as their careers. For over 40 years, they’ve supported each other’s dreams of making movies – they even once shared a bank account! Naturally, they’ve often appeared in films together, and we’re ranking all of those here. We’re only including movies where both Affleck and Damon had acting roles, so we won’t be including The Instigators, which Affleck produced but didn’t act in.

We didn’t include the people who briefly appeared as extras in the Field of Dreams scene at Fenway Park, either. To be counted, someone had to actually have a line of dialogue. Plus, spotting them in that scene is incredibly difficult – you’d need exceptional eyesight!

Warning: One of the following entries contains a mention of sexual assault.

11) Jersey Girl

It’s true that Jersey Girl is a bit of a controversial film. While some consider it a hidden gem in Kevin Smith’s work, even its fans admit it’s overly sweet and lasts a little over an hour and forty minutes.

Ben Affleck really carries this film, showcasing his strong working relationship with Kevin Smith. Matt Damon appears briefly as a publicist, along with Jason Lee, another frequent Smith collaborator. While Jersey Girl isn’t Smith’s absolute worst movie—Yoga Hosers comes to mind—it’s ultimately pretty unremarkable.

10) Glory Daze

As a film buff, I always find it interesting to see the early work of actors. Glory Daze really feels like a Ben Affleck project – Matt Damon just makes a quick appearance. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of Dazed and Confused, not just because of the similar title, but also because both Affleck and Matthew McConaughey are in it – though, like Damon, McConaughey’s role is pretty small.

While Glory Daze definitely taps into that ’90s feeling, it’s tough to place it much higher on a list. It’s also hard to consider it a great Affleck-Damon film when one of them doesn’t even have a single line.

9) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Four years after making Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck reprised their roles as Will Hunting and Chuckie Sullivan in Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season. However, the sequel was quite different from the original.

And it wasn’t actually happening—it was a scene from the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. That film served as a major crossover event for the View Askewniverse, much like The Avengers was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s the highlight of a movie that mostly doesn’t land, but has a few genuinely funny moments.

8) Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Overall, Jay and Silent Reboot is a little bit better than Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Like its predecessor, it has some funny parts, but it relies too heavily on pop culture references and jokes that aren’t as funny as they used to be.

Affleck and Damon both make good cameo appearances. Damon reprises his role as Loki from Dogma, briefly catching viewers up on what happened afterward, and even throws in a joke referencing The Bourne Identity. Affleck returns as Holden McNeil, this time with nods to his time playing Batman and his film Jersey Girl.

7) Chasing Amy

When it was released in the late 1990s, Chasing Amy was considered Kevin Smith’s most sincere and forward-thinking film. However, looking at it today, it hasn’t aged as well.

The film features one of Ben Affleck’s stronger performances from early in his career, and he appears in almost every scene. Matt Damon makes a brief appearance as an executive, along with frequent Kevin Smith collaborator Brian O’Halloran.

6) Dogma

This marks the beginning of the six films where both Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have significant on-screen roles together. It’s also considered the high point of their creative work with director Kevin Smith.

While not every joke hits the mark, Dogma is a remarkably ambitious film with sharp observations. Casting Alanis Morissette as God was a brilliant move. This film marked a fascinating departure for its creators after Good Will Hunting. Instead of focusing on a pair of friends – one a genius, the other supportive – they created two rebellious fallen angels fed up with divine rules and humanity’s focus on money.

5) The Rip

The latest film from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, directed by Joe Carnahan and titled The Rip, fits right into the standard Netflix action movie mold. It’s intense, features a few surprising turns, and has a generally dark and moody look.

While many Affleck-Damon films showcase their strong on-screen chemistry, The Rip is unique because it features a noticeably strained and competitive relationship between the two actors. There’s more to the story, but we’ll avoid spoilers for now. Overall, it’s a solid addition to Netflix’s offerings, earning three out of five stars and keeping you engaged for its almost two-hour length.

4) School Ties

Although both actors had appeared in films before – with Matt Damon having a small role in Mystic Pizza – their first significant movie together was this one, following Field of Dreams. However, the film truly belongs to Brendan Fraser; he’s the one who carries it.

Though the film mainly highlights Brendan Fraser’s acting, Matt Damon also shines as Charlie Dillon. Damon is usually known for playing the good guy, but he’s excellent as the villain here. Ben Affleck’s part is smaller, but his character, Chesty Smith, appears enough to mark a solid first film role. School Ties remains a well-loved drama from the 90s, and deservedly so, even though it deals with difficult themes.

3) Air

Ben Affleck’s Air is similar to Moneyball because it centers around sports but is still enjoyable even if you’re not a sports fan. It’s a light and engaging look at the business deals behind athletics, and it succeeds in being entertaining.

The movie features fantastic and frequent conversations, a truly impressive supporting cast, and captivating scenes between Ben Affleck as Sonny Vaccaro and Matt Damon as Phil Knight. It’s a great choice for a relaxing Saturday afternoon and boasts the best soundtrack of all the films on this list.

2) The Last Duel

After more than two decades, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon teamed up to write another film, this time with Nicole Holofcener. Though The Last Duel is a well-made movie, it didn’t connect with most viewers.

The film’s failure isn’t surprising. Spending $100 million on a story with conflicting accounts of a sexual assault was a huge risk. While it initially appears to be a typical action movie, it delves into much more difficult themes. Over time, however, many viewers have come to appreciate it, particularly praising Jodie Comer’s excellent acting.

1) Good Will Hunting

Everyone knew Good Will Hunting would be a breakthrough for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It earned them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and quickly made them famous. The following year, Affleck starred in Armageddon while Damon led Rounders and had a significant supporting role in the critically acclaimed Saving Private Ryan.

Even now, Good Will Hunting remains the most personal film for both Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. It doesn’t feel like a typical Hollywood production, but rather a story they were truly passionate about sharing. Combined with Robin Williams’ memorable performance, this is what makes it a standout movie from 1997.
