Ubisoft Cancels Prince of Persia Remake and 5 Other Games

The company has often made decisions that spark debate, and its recent announcements are likely to upset a lot of gamers. Especially disappointing news has come for fans of the popular Prince of Persia series – it’s arguably the biggest letdown they’ve experienced in years.

Due to a company-wide reorganization at Ubisoft, the planned remake of a classic PlayStation 2 platformer has been canceled. Fans had been eagerly awaiting a new 3D Prince of Persia game after a 16-year gap, but development of the project—first announced in 2020—has now stopped.

Ubisoft Is Canceling and Delaying Major Games

The Prince of Persia series is a classic, launching in 1989 and continuing with releases up to 2025. However, the 2003 game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, remains the most beloved and recognizable installment. Originally released for GameCube, Xbox, and PlayStation 2, Sands of Time revitalized the series with its cinematic 3D platforming, engaging gameplay, full voice acting, and impressive visuals.

The original Prince of Persia game was incredibly popular, leading to several sequels and even a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben Kingsley. After a disappointing entry in 2010, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, fans were excited to hear about a remake of Sands of Time. However, the game faced many development problems over the following years, and the initial enthusiasm faded.

Ubisoft has cancelled the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and is also delaying seven other games. As part of a company restructuring into five creative teams, two development studios are also being closed.

Ubisoft is making significant changes to how it operates, including a restructuring of its projects and priorities over the next three years. The company says this is to concentrate on delivering higher-quality open-world adventure games and better allocate its resources.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft has canceled several games, including a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, because they no longer align with the company’s current goals. The news was officially announced on the Prince of Persia account on X (formerly Twitter).

We have some difficult news for the Prince of Persia community. We’ve decided to stop working on the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. We understand this is very disappointing, as this game is special to both our fans and the people who have been developing it.

Although the project showed promise, we couldn’t deliver the quality our audience expects. Continuing would have taken too much time and money, and we didn’t want to release a product that didn’t live up to the standards of The Sands of Time.

We still care deeply about the world of Prince of Persia and its history, and we want to assure you that we aren’t abandoning the series. Thank you for your continued enthusiasm, understanding, and love for Prince of Persia.
