2 PS1 Games From the 1990s Returning on New Platforms This Week

Two well-loved games from the original PlayStation are coming back this week on modern consoles. Several PS1 titles have already been re-released or remastered this year, including Ridge Racer which just launched on PS5 and PS4. It will soon be joined by updated versions of Dragon Quest VII, Front Mission 3, and Tomb Raider. Now, two more classic PS1 games are being added to this growing list, and they’ll be available much sooner than some of the other re-releases.

On January 23rd, the classic beat ’em up games Fighting Force and Fighting Force 2 are coming to PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The first Fighting Force debuted on PlayStation in 1997 and was created by Core Design, the team famous for the original Tomb Raider. While reviews were mixed, the game was successful enough to warrant a sequel in 1999. However, Fighting Force 2 didn’t perform as well, ultimately ending the series. Now, fans who’ve been waiting to revisit these retro games will finally have the chance!

The Fighting Force Collection, including both games in the series, is coming from Limited Run Games. Originally announced in June 2024, news about its release date had been quiet for nearly a year. This week, Limited Run Games announced the digital version will be available in just a few days. Physical copies, which were available for pre-order some time ago, will ship in the months ahead.

The price of the Fighting Force Collection when it launches on PlayStation, Nintendo, and Steam is still unknown. While Limited Run Games typically sells similar releases for $19.99, that price isn’t guaranteed. As for improvements to Fighting Force and Fighting Force 2, it appears the collection is mostly a port of the original games, rather than a full remaster or remake, so don’t expect significant changes.
