Oscar 2026 Nominations: All the Shocking Snubs and Surprises

Members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences know cinema.

When Danielle Brooks, known for The Color Purple, and Lewis Pullman, from Top Gun: Maverick, revealed the nominees for the Oscars on January 22nd, some surprising films made the list, while other expected contenders were left out.

Despite receiving a lot of recognition for her role as Glinda The Good this season, Ariana Grande wasn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The same goes for Marty Supreme’s performance as Odessa A’Zion. Paul Mescal was also surprisingly left out of the Best Supporting Actor category, even though he had been widely praised for his work in Hamnet.

However, the Oscar nominations also included a few surprises after the Critics Choice and Golden Globes awards. Delroy Lindo, the star of Sinners, received his first-ever Oscar nomination for his role as Delta Slim. And even though the competition for Best Actress was strong, Kate Hudson was nominated for her performance in Song Sung Blue.

Getting an Oscar nomination isn’t everything for an actor’s career. Amanda Seyfried, who wasn’t nominated for her work in The Testament of Ann Lee, recently shared that winning an Oscar wasn’t a major goal for her.

In a recent interview with The New Yorker, 40-year-old Amanda said she plans to continue working on a variety of projects, both independent films and big studio productions. When asked about the possibility of winning an Oscar, she jokingly questioned why she would need one at this point in her career, having come this far without one.

As she put it, “I feel I’m already proven.”

Other actors have shared how much being nominated—or winning—an award means to them, regardless of the specific ceremony. For example, Timothée Chalamet, who received his third Oscar nomination for his role in Marty Supreme, gave a touching speech after winning a Golden Globe earlier this month, talking about the importance of dedication and effort.

Timothée expressed deep gratitude after winning the Golden Globe on January 11th. He acknowledged the incredible talent of his fellow nominees, saying he admired and respected everyone in the category.

The 30-year-old shared that while he appreciated being nominated in the past, winning the award this time felt especially meaningful.

He shared that his father taught him to always be thankful. This mindset helped him move past difficult experiences – even leaving this event without an award – with dignity and appreciation for simply being included. He admitted that those past challenges actually made this achievement feel even more rewarding.

If you’re a star celebrating an unexpected award or using a disappointment as motivation, here’s something for you…

Ariana Grande was nominated for her work in the original Wicked, and recently received Golden Globe and Actor Award nominations, but she didn’t receive a second Oscar nomination for her role as Glinda the Good.

I honestly can’t believe it! He was amazing acting with George Clooney in ‘Jay Kelly,’ seriously giving one of the best performances I’ve ever seen, and the Academy completely snubbed him for Best Supporting Actor? It’s a total injustice! I was so sure he’d get nominated, and now I’m just… frustrated. He deserved it, absolutely deserved it!

While many people were excited about Jacob’s performance in Frankenstein, it’s surprising to see him nominated for Best Supporting Actor, given the strong competition this year.

Can you BELIEVE they didn’t even nominate Regina for her incredible work in One Battle After Another? Seriously, she absolutely deserved Best Supporting Actress, and it’s a total injustice that she was completely overlooked! I’m still fuming about it, honestly. She was the best part of that movie!

I was absolutely captivated by Paul’s portrayal of William Shakespeare in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet. I truly believed he deserved recognition from both the Golden Globes and the Actor Awards – a Supporting Actor nomination would have been so well-deserved! It’s a shame the Academy Awards didn’t acknowledge his brilliant work, though.

Okay, so last year’s Wicked movie was HUGE – all those nominations, it was amazing! But honestly, I’m completely devastated that the sequel got totally overlooked. Like, zero nominations for anything big, not even Best Picture? It’s just…wrong! I was so excited and now I’m heartbroken. They had to have seen how incredible it was, right?

Although One Battle After Another received nominations in several other categories at the Oscars, Chase wasn’t nominated for her performance as the lead actress.

Jennifer received a lot of attention as a potential Oscar nominee for her role in Die, My Love, but she wasn’t ultimately nominated.

Although Delroy wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe or other major acting award, he finally received an Oscar nomination for his role as Delta Slim – a well-deserved recognition.

The Best Actress field was very competitive, making Kate’s nomination for Song Sung Blue a delightful surprise.

The actress from Marty Supreme received a nomination for the Actor Awards, but wasn’t nominated for an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category despite her performance.

Amanda’s performance in The Testament of Anne Lee was considered strong enough to earn her a Best Actress nomination, but she wasn’t ultimately selected.
