Darth Maul Returns in Maul: Shadow Lord Trailer, Revealing Star Wars’ New Sith Apprentice

I’m so excited! The trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord just dropped, and it’s a huge moment for Star Wars. It’s amazing to think that even George Lucas realized he’d made a mistake killing off Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace, which is why he brought him back for The Clone Wars. Now, after 27 years, Darth Maul is finally getting his own series! It’s set during the dark days of the Empire, and it looks like we’ll see him building up a criminal empire and even taking on an apprentice. I can’t wait!

The first trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord is here, giving fans a look at an intense journey into the criminal side of the Star Wars galaxy. New episodes will be released twice a week starting April 6, 2026, culminating in a finale on May the 4th – Star Wars Day. The trailer also introduces Devon Izara, a red-skinned Twi’lek with Force abilities who appears to be becoming Darth Talon. This character originally came from the older Star Wars Expanded Universe and was actually conceived by George Lucas as Maul’s apprentice.

Darth Talon Has Finally Made Her Way Into Star Wars Canon

Darth Talon is a powerful Sith assassin who first appeared in the Star Wars: Legacy comic series, taking place a hundred years after the events involving Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. She’s known for her striking appearance, covered in tattoos she earned through ritual battles. George Lucas was very impressed with Talon’s design and even considered including her in his planned sequels. His idea was to have Darth Maul return with an apprentice – Talon – as a crime boss, and for Luke and Leia to ultimately defeat them.

The story differs from what many might expect. Instead of taking place after the original Star Wars trilogy, Maul: Shadow Lord is set during a darker period in galactic history. This aligns with the established storyline where Maul definitively died in Star Wars Rebels. This change is interesting because it creates a rivalry between Darth Maul and Darth Talon, both vying for the attention of Palpatine and Darth Vader. It introduces a second group of Sith, challenging the established ‘Rule of Two’. However, this also puts Darth Talon in a precarious position, as she’s absent from Rebels, hinting at a potentially fatal outcome – possibly even at the hands of Darth Vader.

Darth Talon’s appearance has been significantly updated, which is a positive change. The original comic book portrayal was criticized for being overly sexualized and for negatively representing the Twi’lek species. Recent Star Wars stories have made an effort to depict Twi’leks as complex characters, and it’s great to see that continue with this reimagining of Devon Izara. It will be interesting to see what role she plays in the Maul: Shadow Lord story.
