As a huge movie and TV fan, I’ve noticed a really cool trend lately: filmmakers are turning to awesome books for story ideas! Honestly, it makes perfect sense – there are so many incredible plots and surprises already written, just waiting to come to life on screen. It’s like a treasure trove of stories!

This year promises a lot of exciting movies and shows based on books! We’ll see fresh takes on classics like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film adaptation of Wuthering Heights is already generating buzz.

TikTok users will be happy to see several popular #BookTok titles becoming available, including books like Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him and Verity.

Agatha Christie is famous for her thrilling mystery novels, so it’s no surprise many of her books have been turned into TV shows and movies. Netflix’s newest adaptation is a three-part series based on “The Seven Dials Mystery.” It centers around a puzzling death that occurs the day after a lavish party at a beautiful mansion. The series stars Mia McKenna-Bruce, alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman, and promises to be an enjoyable and captivating watch.

2. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

George R.R. Martin continues to build his world of Westeros with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This new story takes place a century before the events of Game of Thrones, and follows the journey of Dunk and Egg as they navigate the challenges of the Targaryen era.

3. H is for Hawk

How to watch: in cinemas, 23rd January

Helen Macdonald’s moving 2014 memoir, about overcoming grief through her passion for falconry, has been beautifully adapted into a film. The movie stars Clare Foy and Brendon Gleeson, and features a sensitive script written by novelist Emma Donoghue.

4. Hamnet

Maggie O’Farrell’s popular 2020 novel has been adapted into a film starring Jessie Buckley, which is receiving a lot of awards attention. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the movie features Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as his wife, Agnes, and tells the moving story of their grief following the death of their son, Hamnet.

5. His and Hers

How to watch: now on Netflix

Alice Feeney’s suspenseful thriller, His and Hers, is coming to Netflix starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal. The story centers on Anna, a newsreader, and her ex-detective husband, Jack Harper, as they become entangled in a murder investigation with plenty of hidden secrets.

If you’ve enjoyed Emily Henry’s popular romance novels, you’ll likely love the new adaptation now streaming on Netflix. The story centers on Poppy and Alex, best friends who had a falling out after a trip to Croatia two years prior, and the series jumps between flashbacks of that vacation and their current situation.

7. Bridgerton season 4 (An Offer From a Gentleman)

How to watch: Netflix, 29th January

Season 4 of Bridgerton focuses on the blossoming romance between Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie (Yerin Ha), continuing the adaptation of Julia Quinn’s popular novels with a large production budget on Netflix.

8. Wuthering Heights

How to watch: in cinemas 13th February

A new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights” is creating quite a stir. Directed by Emerald Fennell, the film stars Margot Robbie as Cathy and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, offering a fresh and modern take on the beloved story. Owen Cooper also plays a young Heathcliff, and popular musician Charli XCX composed the soundtrack.

9. Outlander season 8 (Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone)

As a huge fan of Diana Gabaldon’s work, I was thrilled to dive into the ninth book! It continues the incredible story of Jamie and Claire, and this time, it’s wonderful to see them reunited with their daughter, Brianna, and her family as they attempt to create a life for themselves again at Fraser’s Ridge. But things are far from peaceful – with unrest building across the colonies, Jamie soon finds himself facing the threat of war right on his own land.

10. The Bride!

How to watch: in cinemas 6th March

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s new film is a dark and creative reimagining of the Frankenstein story. Jessie Buckley plays the character traditionally known as Frankenstein, and Christian Bale portrays the creature. Set in 1930s Chicago, the film centers on the creature’s request for a doctor to create him a companion, a plea that quickly leads to violent consequences.

11. Scarpetta

How to watch: Amazon Prime Video, 11th March

Nicole Kidman plays Kay Scarpetta, the main character in Patricia Cornwell’s popular crime novels. This is the first-ever TV adaptation of the series, and it follows Kay as she investigates crimes and deals with her own difficult past.

After serving time in prison, Kenna comes home hoping to start over and reconnect with her daughter. However, she quickly discovers that moving on isn’t easy and that some people aren’t willing to let go of the past. Starring Maika Monroe, this film is based on the popular novel by Colleen Hoover.

This series, starring Kerry Washington and Elisabeth Moss, is based on Araminta Hall’s bestselling psychological thriller. It follows two lifelong friends whose relationship is shattered by a shocking crime. As the mystery unfolds, long-held secrets are revealed, leaving viewers to question if they ever truly knew each other.

14. Project Hail Mary

Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship, completely alone and with no idea how he got there. Shelby Van Pelt’s heartwarming novel about love, loss, and friendship has already captured the hearts of many readers, and a new Netflix adaptation coming this spring is sure to win over even more. The story centers on Tova Sullivan, who works as a cleaner at the Sowell Bay Aquarium while quietly grieving the disappearance of her son over three decades ago. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she forms a unique bond with Marcellus, a giant octopus, and their friendship is at the heart of this beautifully unfolding tale.

17. The Odyssey

The timeless story of Homer’s Odyssey is being reimagined as a large-scale, epic film by director Christopher Nolan. The movie boasts a significant budget and a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya. It follows Odysseus’ decade-long voyage home, filled with encounters with mythical beings and powerful gods, while his wife Penelope and son Telemachus navigate trouble with persistent suitors in his absence.

Alice Hoffman’s second novel in the Practical Magic series follows the Owens family, who have a long history of difficulty with romance due to a family curse. The story was also made into a film starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock.

Colleen Hoover is having another one of her novels turned into a movie, and this one boasts a fantastic cast including Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who gets a life-changing opportunity: completing the popular novels of bestselling author Verity Crawford. When Lowen moves into the Crawford family’s home, she begins to uncover unsettling secrets about them.

20. Remain

How to watch: in cinemas 23rd October

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, this film is based on the novel by Nicolas Sparks and M. Night Shymalan. It follows Tate Donovan, a New York architect who travels to Cape Cod to help a friend with a house project. Still grieving the loss of his sister and struggling with depression, Tate finds his life turned upside down when he meets the captivating Wren, who makes him question his carefully constructed world.

21. Sunrise on the Reaping

How to watch: in cinemas 20th November

Suzanne Collins’ new book takes place 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, telling the story of the 50th Hunger Games and how Haymitch Abernathy won. The film stars Joseph Zada, along with Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, and other talented actors.

22. Dune Messiah (Dune: Part Three)

How to watch: in cinemas 18th December

Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and the rest of the cast are back for the third Dune movie, directed by Dennis Villeneuve. Based on Frank Herbert’s classic novels, Dune has become a huge blockbuster franchise, rivaling Star Wars in popularity and scope. The upcoming film, Dune Messiah, will conclude the story of Paul Atreides.

Stephen King’s famous horror story, Carrie, is getting a new adaptation as an Amazon Prime Video series. Summer H Howell will play Carrie White, a troubled teen struggling with hidden powers. 24. Pride and Prejudice

Everyone knows the story of Pride and Prejudice, and it’s been made into a movie or TV show many times. Now, a new adaptation is coming to Netflix, starring Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy, Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet.

25. The Love Hypothesis

In Ali Hazelwood’s novel, Olive Smith, a PhD student, doesn’t think true love lasts. When her well-meaning friend challenges her, Olive finds herself in a tricky situation: she needs to appear to be dating someone. A spontaneous kiss with a handsome professor leads to a fake-dating scheme to appease her friend, but things get complicated when real feelings develop.

26. The Other Bennet Sister

It seems like there are always multiple adaptations of Pride and Prejudice appearing around the same time.
