We May Already Know One of Avengers: Doomsday’s Major Hero Deaths

For fifteen years, Sebastian Stan has been a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting as the supportive character Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger and developing into a more complicated anti-hero over eleven films and series. He’s been a constant throughout the MCU’s success, recently leading the Thunderbolts team and playing a crucial role in Captain America: Brave New World. Stan will continue his record-breaking run with Avengers: Doomsday later this year, but his career is now expanding into the DC Universe. He’s been cast as Harvey Dent, who transforms into the villain Two-Face, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II. This busy schedule could hint at the eventual ending of Bucky Barnes’ story within the larger, multiversal conflicts.

The upcoming filming schedules for the next two Avengers movies give us a good idea of what the future holds for Bucky Barnes. Marvel plans to start filming Avengers: Secret Wars in the summer of 2026, which will require actors to be available for months. At the same time, Warner Bros. is starting production on The Batman Part II in the spring of 2026. Both movies are packed with secrets and complex storylines, making it difficult for an actor to star in both at the same time. Because the filming schedules overlap, it seems likely Bucky Barnes won’t be involved in Avengers: Secret Wars. This suggests that the Winter Soldier’s story will likely conclude during the events of Avengers: Doomsday.

Is Bucky Dying in Avengers: Doomsday?

Considering the demands of major film franchises, if Stan is seriously being considered for a big villain role in The Batman Part II, it probably means his schedule isn’t tied up with a long-term commitment to Avengers: Secret Wars. While characters don’t always have to die to leave a story, Bucky Barnes hasn’t really had a significant role in the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He mostly served as a supporting character for Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and helped guide Yelena Belova in Thunderbolts. Since Avengers: Doomsday will likely need to kill off important characters to emphasize the threat of Victor von Doom and create emotional impact, the Russo brothers might choose to eliminate a popular character who hasn’t been central to the MCU’s recent storylines.

It’s possible Sebastian Stan’s roles in both The Batman Part II and Avengers: Secret Wars will be minor, letting him film for both projects without major scheduling conflicts. Director Matt Reeves has hinted the next Batman villain will be someone we haven’t seen as the main bad guy in a live-action movie before. Because Two-Face has already been a central villain in previous Batman films, Harvey Dent might not be the primary antagonist this time, but instead play a supporting role. If Stan only needs a few weeks to film his scenes in The Batman Part II – perhaps to introduce the character and his background – he’d still have enough time to film a few scenes for Avengers: Secret Wars. This would let Marvel keep the character alive for potential future appearances, while also allowing Stan to work on projects within the DC Universe, potentially alongside Scarlett Johansson. Avengers: Secret Wars is currently set to release on December 18, 2026.
