Sometimes, parenthood means winging it.
In the case of Grimes and Elon Musk, that could have a literal meaning.
The singer, who shares five-year-old X Æ A-Xii, four-year-old Exa Dark Sideræl, and three-year-old Techno “Tau” Mechanicus with the Tesla CEO, recently shared a surprising story: one of their children somehow managed to direct a group of crows for a short time.
Grimes recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that she generally avoids publicly discussing or showing her children, believing they deserve privacy. However, she added that she feels their unique energy is exceptional, admitting she might be biased.
She added, “What’s hilarious is my dad also has an allegiant flock of crows.”
Beyond her unique family situation, Claire Boucher—known as Grimes—faces common parenting challenges. The 37-year-old singer and Elon Musk, 54, frequently disagree about how much time their children should spend using screens.
“The other parent is fine w it,” Grimes shared, “but it’s fairly avoided.”
She mentioned she likes her children to watch gentler, more thoughtful movies, such as those made by Studio Ghibli, when they have the chance.
The musician said they prefer art that remains meaningful over time, rather than things that are trendy or quickly lose relevance.

Grimes, on the other hand, is very protective of her children’s privacy. She has repeatedly asked Elon Musk—her former partner of three years, before they split in 2021—to avoid exposing their kids to public attention.
She explained on X (formerly Twitter) in March that she’s desperately tried everything to protect her children’s privacy online, including asking the children’s father and even exploring legal options. She’s deeply worried about the impact of their public exposure and constantly searches for a solution, feeling frustrated that there’s no clear way to address the problem.
Read on for a deeper dive into Elon’s family tree, including his 14 kids.

Maye was born in Saskatchewan, Canada and moved to Pretoria, South Africa with her parents in 1950 when she was seven years old. She separated from Elon Musk’s father, Errol Musk, in 1979.
Maye became a Canadian citizen by birthright shortly after Elon moved to Canada at age 17. She then built a career in Canada, becoming a dietician and eventually President of the Consulting Dieticians of Canada, while also working as a model.
After selling his company Zip2 for over $300 million in 2019, Elon Musk bought an apartment in New York City for his mother. She lived there for 13 years and continued her modeling work, even signing with the prestigious IMG Models agency.
In an essay for CNBC, Maye explained that she raised her children with the same values her parents instilled in her: independence, kindness, honesty, consideration for others, and good manners. She also emphasized the importance of hard work and doing what’s right.

Elon’s father is an engineer and like Elon, was born in South Africa.
In a 2015 interview with Forbes, Errol Musk mentioned frequently traveling the world with his children after his divorce—he said, “Their mother and I separated when they were young, and the kids lived with me. I took them all over the world.” However, his relationship with his son, Elon, isn’t always smooth.
In a candid 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Elon Musk spoke about his difficult childhood and his relationship with his father. He explained that after his parents divorced, living with his father proved to be a negative experience.
However, Errol told Rolling Stone, “I love my children and would readily do whatever for them.”
After my divorce from Maye, I married Heide, who had a lovely four-year-old daughter named Jana Bezuidenhout. Heide and I went on to have two daughters of our own, but unfortunately, that relationship didn’t last either.
After experiencing her own heartbreak years later, Jana contacted Errol. In a 2018 interview with The Sunday Times, Errol described them both as lonely and lost individuals who found each other. He playfully suggested their connection was simply fate – “God’s plan or nature’s plan,” as he put it.
The couple fell in love and had a son, Elliott, in 2017, followed by a daughter in 2019. Errol explained to The Sun that he believes the purpose of life is to have children, and he would welcome another if he could, seeing no reason not to.

Born in 1972, Kimbal is a restaurant owner and created The Kitchen, a group of five restaurants that get their ingredients directly from local farms. He also leads Big-Green, a non-profit organization that has created 200 learning gardens in schools throughout the United States.
Tosca, a filmmaker born in 1974, created Passionflix in 2017. Passionflix is a streaming service designed for women and aims to capitalize on the popular and lucrative world of romance novels.

Elon Musk married Justine Wilson, his college sweetheart from Queen’s University in Canada, in 2000. In a 2010 article for Marie Claire titled “I Was a Starter Wife: Inside America’s Messiest Divorce,” Justine recalled that Elon told her during their wedding reception, “I am the alpha in this marriage.”
At the time, I didn’t think much of it,” Justine explained, “much like I later dismissed signing the postnuptial agreement. But it eventually became clear that he was sincere about what he said.”
In 2002, Justine and her partner experienced a heartbreaking loss when their 10-week-old son, Nevada Alexander, unexpectedly passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). According to Justine, Nevada had been put down for a nap on his back, as usual, and simply stopped breathing.
After struggling to conceive, the couple used IVF and eventually had five more children: twins Vivian and Griffin, and triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian.
In 2008, Elon filed for divorce.

In 2022, Elon Musk brought his children, Griffin and his triplets, to meet Pope Francis. Though he was pleased to meet the head of the Catholic Church, Elon jokingly described his outfit as “tragic.”

In 2022, Griffin’s twin sister also petitioned the court to legally change her name to reflect her gender identity. As part of this process, she stated she wanted no further contact or legal ties with their father.
In July 2024, Elon Musk publicly discussed his daughter’s gender transition. During an interview with Jordan Peterson for the Daily Wire, he stated that he felt as though he had lost his son, and described his daughter – whom he still referred to by her birth name – as having been affected by what he called the “woke mind virus.”
He claimed he was misled into signing medical paperwork that allowed Vivian to receive gender-affirming care.
Vivian disagreed with his statements, telling NBC News, “He wasn’t tricked at all. He was fully aware of the potential side effects.”
In a 2025 interview with Teen Vogue, Vivian shared that she moved from Los Angeles to Japan and hasn’t spoken with her father since 2020. She described him as immature, saying, “Why would I be afraid of him? Just because he has money doesn’t impress me at all.”

Elon and Talulah, both known for their roles on the HBO series Westworld, got married in 2010. Talulah later shared with CBS News that things moved quickly – they were engaged after only about two weeks of dating.
The couple first divorced in 2012, then surprised everyone by getting back together and remarrying in 2013. However, they divorced again in 2016. More recently, in June 2024, Talulah married Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who is known for his role in the film Love Actually.

Elon Musk and Amber Heard began dating publicly in early 2017, following Amber’s divorce from Johnny Depp and Elon’s second divorce from Talulah. However, their relationship was short-lived.
In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Elon Musk revealed he had recently gone through a breakup. He admitted he was deeply in love and that the split was painful, adding that his girlfriend had initiated the breakup more than he had.

Elon Musk and the singer Grimes had an on-and-off relationship for four years, beginning in 2018. In September 2021, Musk told Page Six they were essentially separated, explaining that his work with SpaceX and Tesla kept him mostly in Texas or abroad, while Grimes’s work was centered in Los Angeles. He added that she was currently staying with him and their son, nicknamed Baby X, was nearby.
In March 2022, she told Vanity Fair that while they live in separate homes, they maintain a close relationship as best friends.
She later shared on Twitter that she and E had broken up again as of the time of the article, but emphasized that he remains her best friend and the love of her life. She added that her life and work are now fully committed to ‘The Mission’.
As a huge fan, I was so surprised to find out in September 2023 that they actually have three kids! It was great to hear the singer confirm it – their newest little one, Techno Mechanicus, joins big brother X Æ A-12 and sister Exa Dark Sideræl. What a unique and growing family!
In November 2024, Grimes shared that she had been involved in a year-long legal struggle in a state with unfavorable laws regarding parental rights. She claimed her Instagram posts and modeling work were used against her in a custody dispute, all while she was experiencing a difficult separation from the father of her children, who she felt was changing into someone she didn’t recognize.
Despite being limited in what she could bring to bear, she was prevented from seeing one of her children for five months. She explained that she was only sharing what could be discussed publicly, as much of what she’d gone through in recent years needed to remain private.

In 2020, Elon Musk and Grimes had a son. They initially chose a unique name, but had to simplify the spelling to comply with California law, which only allows English letters. They ultimately named him X Æ A-Xii.
Grimes shared the meaning behind her child’s unique name on social media. ‘X’ represents an unknown variable, while ‘Æ’ is her elven-inspired way of spelling ‘Ai,’ which stands for either love or artificial intelligence. ‘A-12’ is a reference to the SR-17 aircraft – her favorite – and symbolizes speed and capability without any weaponry or defenses. She describes it as excellent in a competitive situation but fundamentally non-violent.
Grimes continued, “A=Archangel, my favorite song” adding a rat and sword emoji. “Metal rat.”

Grimes shared in a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair that she and Elon Musk secretly had a daughter through surrogacy.
She explained that ‘Exa’ comes from ‘exaFLOPS,’ a term used in supercomputing to describe the ability to perform an incredibly high number of calculations – one quintillion per second. And when they say ‘Dark,’ she continued, it simply refers to the unknown. While people often fear it, darkness is really just the lack of light. ‘Dark matter,’ she added, is one of the most fascinating mysteries in the universe.
Okay, so Mom has this whole thing about ‘Sideræl’ – it’s pronounced ‘sigh-deer-ee-el,’ which is SO cool, and she says it’s like, the real time, you know? Not our time here on Earth, but the time of the universe, of the stars, of deep space! It’s seriously mind-blowing. And get this – she named it after Galadriel from Lord of the Rings! Apparently, it’s because Galadriel chooses to give up the ring, and Mom thought that fit with what she’s trying to do with this whole Sideræl concept. It’s just… perfect, honestly. I’m totally obsessed with it!
Walter Isaacson revealed in his biography Elon Musk that Exa was born in December 2021 via surrogate.
The book reveals that around Father’s Day in 2022, the couple, who had a fluctuating relationship, welcomed a son named Techno Mechanicus, but they call him Tau. The baby was born via surrogate, and the book features a June 2022 photo of Elon feeding him.
Grimes has repeatedly asked for her children to be kept out of the public eye, even trying legal options, but hasn’t been successful. In a 2025 social media post, she expressed deep concern about the lack of privacy for her kids, saying it’s something she worries about constantly and feels helpless to fix. She finds it frustrating that there’s no effective way to protect them from unwanted attention.

In 2022, court records obtained by Business Insider revealed that Elon Musk had twins with Shivon Zilis, an executive at his company Neuralink. The twins were born in Austin, Texas, where Musk resides.
He also commented on the report via X, stating he’s “doing his best to help the underpopulation crisis,” and that a declining birth rate is the most significant threat to civilization.
“Mark my words,” he added, “they are sadly true.”
A 2023 biography of Elon Musk revealed the full names of his twins: Strider Sekhar Sirius and Azure Astra Alice. Musk explained that Strider’s name came from the nickname of Aragorn in Lord of the Rings and in honor of physicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. Azure’s name, meanwhile, was inspired by a spell from the video game Elden Ring.

As many of you probably heard, I’m thrilled to share that Elon and Shivon welcomed their third child back in February! It took a little while to confirm, but he finally let me know in June – he joked that everyone close to them already knew, and just because they didn’t announce it with a big press release doesn’t mean it was a secret! It’s wonderful news, and they’re both so happy.
A year after opening, Shivon wrote on Twitter, “Happy birthday, Arcadia! I love you so much.”

The classic poem goes, “Roses are red, violets are blue,” and on Valentine’s Day 2025, conservative personality Ashley St. Clair had some news to share.
As a lot of you know, my life has been pretty full lately! About five months ago, I became a mom to a beautiful baby boy, and Elon Musk is the father. I’ve kept this private until now, wanting to protect my son, Romulus – named after the founder of Rome – and give him a normal start. But it’s become clear the media is planning to share this news anyway, and I feel it’s important to control the narrative and prioritize his wellbeing. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I want to be upfront with you all.
She explained that she wants their child to have a safe and typical upbringing. Therefore, she requested the media to respect their child’s privacy and avoid overly intrusive reporting.
After her representative asked Elon Musk to publicly recognize his role as a father to their child, she claimed he had reduced the financial support he provides. This led Musk to respond to the allegations on social media.
He posted on X on March 31st that he’s unsure if he’s the father of the child, but he’s open to finding out. He also revealed he’s already given Ashley $2.5 million and continues to send her $500,000 each year.
She could have received even more money, according to an April article in the Wall Street Journal. It claimed that Elon Musk’s employee, Jared Birchall, offered Ashley $15 million plus $100,000 a month for child support if she didn’t reveal information about their child.
However, Ashley said she told him, “I don’t want my son to feel like he’s a secret.”

Elon and Shivon announced the birth of their fourth child, a son named Seldon Lycurgus, on February 28, 2025. They shared the news while celebrating their third child’s first birthday.
I spoke with Elon, and because it’s Arcadia’s birthday, we wanted to share news about our amazing son, Seldon Lycurgus. He’s strong and kind, and we love him dearly.
Elon responded with a heart emoji.
