MAPPA was founded in 2012 and quickly became famous for hits like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and the final season of Attack on Titan. This new deal means Netflix will be the only place to stream MAPPA’s anime globally, and it sounds like they’re aiming to build a truly comprehensive, world-class animation studio – showing off the entire creative process from start to finish.

The original series, which premiered in 2016, was a huge success and a turning point for the animation studio. Despite only having one season of 12 episodes, the show ended with a confirmation of its renewal. A prequel movie was announced in 2017, intending to showcase Victor’s path to becoming a five-time champion. However, after a long wait, the studio cancelled the film in 2024, seemingly ending plans for further installments. Following a recent announcement from Netflix, fans online have expressed hope for the story to continue, with posts from users like @mousyymou and @yoidaily gaining significant traction and many others sharing similar feelings.
Without official word from Netflix or the animation studio MAPPA, fans are left hoping the story will continue sometime in the future. Because the anime is original and isn’t based on an existing manga or novel, there’s no source material to reveal what might happen next. The series concluded with Yuri working hard to achieve his dreams, and Victor committed to coaching him until he wins five gold medals, just like Victor did. In the final scenes, the couple performs together following Victor’s return to competitive skating.
The anime’s story seems to take place after Yuri achieves his dreams. Instead of continuing Yuri’s story, the creators decided to explore Victor’s past, giving fans a deeper understanding of his character. Throughout the main series, Victor mainly served as a coach, idol, and partner to Yuri, and his own complex personality wasn’t fully developed. A prequel allows viewers to see Victor’s perspective and motivations, rather than just how others see him. All episodes are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
