In an interview on This American Life, James admitted he didn’t see the point of traditional hard work, thinking those who simply ‘went to work and earned a paycheck’ were naive.

When he was younger, Larson tried many different ways to make money quickly and held a series of jobs. He was actually driving an ice cream truck when he went on the show Press Your Luck, and he told host Peter Tomarken that he hoped to win enough money to avoid having to do that job again that summer.

Larson loved watching television, particularly late-night shows and game shows. After it first aired in 1983, Press Your Luck became one of the programs he watched regularly.

He collected around twelve older gaming consoles and displayed them all over the living room walls. He even stacked some on top of each other. We also had an entire wall covered with 19 and 25-inch televisions, and he’d watch them all simultaneously. The heat from all the electronics was so intense that it actually caused the paint to peel off the walls.

She said he enjoyed watching game shows and was looking for one he could participate in.

Michael Larson became famous for his success on the game show Press Your Luck. He meticulously studied recordings of the show, pausing and rewinding VHS tapes to analyze the patterns. By 1994, he realized there were only six repeating sequences of 18 numbers. After six months of memorizing these patterns, he traveled to California and successfully auditioned to be a contestant.

The producers of Press Your Luck had mixed feelings about contestant Michael Larson. While the contestant coordinator felt something was off about him, the show’s creator, Bill Carruthers, thought Larson seemed friendly and down-to-earth and approved his appearance. Larson filmed his episode in May 1984. During the initial panel discussion with host Peter Tomarken and fellow contestants Ed Long and Janie Letras, Larson didn’t raise any red flags, and the game began as usual.

His Appearance on ‘Press Your Luck’ Rewrote the Rules of the Game

Larson had a pretty standard first round and surprisingly ended it in third place. Darlene Leblich Tipton, who was monitoring the game to ensure fair play, didn’t notice any issues at first, but things started to become unusual in the second round.

During the second round, Larson had an incredible run that surprised everyone. He spun the wheel over 40 times in a row without landing on a Whammy, which was highly unlikely given the one-in-six chance of hitting one. By the end of his streak, Larson had won $110,237 in cash and prizes. He said the experience was incredibly stressful and mentally exhausting, which is why he finally stopped – even though he still hadn’t hit a Whammy.

Where Is Michael Larson Now?

Initially, CBS wouldn’t pay Robert Larson his winnings, suspecting he’d cheated. However, they couldn’t find any proof, and he eventually received the prize money. Following Larson’s appearance on the show, Press Your Luck changed its game board. They increased the number of patterns from six to over twenty to make it harder for contestants to memorize them. Larson returned to Ohio with his winnings, but unfortunately, the money didn’t last. He lost it all through unsuccessful real estate investments and involvement in a multi-level marketing scheme that was investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (according to Biography).

Michael Larson moved to Florida after being investigated for fraud in Ohio. Sadly, he died of cancer before authorities could arrest him. The people depicted weren’t always accurate representations; Shamier Anderson’s character, Chuck, was based on a combination of different real-life crew members rather than one specific person.
