Netflix Is Losing 94% Certified-Fresh ‘Groundhog Day’ at the Worst Possible Time

Each February, many people look to a large, underground rodent – the groundhog – to get a hint about the upcoming spring weather. This quirky tradition has lasted for over a hundred years, and it’s so amusing that it practically begs to be made into a comedy film. In fact, Harold Ramis delivered a hilarious take on the idea with his 1993 classic, Groundhog Day, which is still considered one of the funniest movies from the 90s. Unfortunately, it won’t be available on Netflix much longer, so fans should stream it before it disappears.

Released in theaters on February 12, 1993, Groundhog Day features Bill Murray, known from Saturday Night Live, as a weatherman who finds himself stuck repeating the same day – February 2nd – endlessly while in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. While the idea is completely silly, it’s surprisingly effective, creating a film that’s both funny and genuinely touching. Audiences loved it, earning the movie $105 million in the early 90s and making it the top film at the box office for two consecutive weekends.

The classic comedy Groundhog Day, featuring Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, and many others, is available on Netflix right now, but it won’t be for long. In seriously unfortunate timing, Netflix is removing the film just before Groundhog Day itself. If you enjoy watching it every year as part of your tradition, you’ll need to stream it quickly or make sure you own a copy. It’s really disappointing timing, and Netflix could have easily kept it available through February.
