9 Years Later, This New Horror Movie Looks Like It Can Do Something Even Tom Cruise Failed To

Tom Cruise is a hugely popular and accomplished actor, known for everything from daring stunts in the Mission: Impossible films to the blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick, and collaborations with iconic directors like Stanley Kubrick. But surprisingly, the new horror reboot, The Mummy, is achieving something even he hasn’t: success in a particular area.

Warner Bros. is rebooting The Mummy franchise with a new film directed by Lee Cronin, known for Evil Dead Rise. A short teaser trailer is now available, offering a first glimpse of the movie. The film stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, and May Calamawy, and tells the story of a journalist and his family who are shocked when their daughter, missing for eight years, suddenly reappears in the desert.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Can Reinvent The Modern Mummy Franchise

Lee Cronin’s upcoming The Mummy promises a thrilling revival of the franchise, steering it back towards its horror origins. The early teaser and storyline are genuinely frightening, and given Cronin’s background in horror and the expected R-rating, the 2026 film is set to deliver a truly scary and intense experience.

This is a positive development for the Mummy franchise, as it’s moving away from a path it’s been on for decades. The 1999 Mummy film, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, is widely considered the best and successfully relaunched the series as an adventure film, similar to Indiana Jones. Unfortunately, later sequels and spin-offs damaged the franchise’s reputation and led to a long period of decline.

Even though interest in the older Mummy movies had faded, the franchise was still well-known, and Universal Pictures wanted to revive it. They decided to update the action and adventure style of the 1999 film, making it darker and setting it in modern times, and cast Tom Cruise in the lead role. This resulted in the 2017 Mummy film. Universal was very optimistic about the project, promoting it as the beginning of a larger interconnected series – the Dark Universe – featuring their classic monsters.

The film wasn’t successful. It started poorly with a disappointing trailer, and unfortunately, it didn’t improve. Critics disliked the Tom Cruise movie, finding it unoriginal and failing to capture the spirit of The Mummy. Many consider the 2017 version to be the worst in the series and one of the most ridiculed films of the 2010s.

As a huge cinema fan, I was a little disappointed when Tom Cruise’s attempt to bring The Mummy back to life didn’t quite ignite a new obsession with the franchise. But I’m feeling much more hopeful about Lee Cronin’s take on The Mummy – the first teaser trailer has been getting a really positive response online, which is great! If the movie is a hit with both critics and audiences, it could finally achieve what Cruise’s film couldn’t: a true Mummy revival.

Brendan Fraser’s New The Mummy Can Do Tom Cruise’s Movie Right

Besides Lee Cronin’s upcoming The Mummy film, another Mummy movie is being planned! Brendan Fraser is set to reprise his role in a new sequel – likely The Mummy 4. Although it’s still in early stages, the film is expected to recapture the fun, adventurous spirit of the original 1999 movie, which is great news for fans.

Okay, so this new Mummy film seems to be taking cues more from Tom Cruise’s version than the earlier one directed by Cronin. That’s going to invite a lot of comparisons, naturally. It’s a risky move, because it could end up like some of those disappointing sequels we’ve seen. But, if this one really delivers, it could actually show how to do this kind of adventure right – something Cruise’s film never quite managed.

The next Mummy movie will likely be more of an action-adventure film than a scary thriller, similar to the original from 1999. This could make Tom Cruise’s reboot seem less exciting, especially if both this new Mummy film and a previous one are better received.
