3 Upcoming Sonic Movies On the Way (Report)

SEGA and Paramount Pictures are planning a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The first two films, based on the popular video game character, have been very successful, earning over $1 billion worldwide. Fans have also enjoyed the Sonic universe on television with a Knuckles spin-off series on Paramount+.

Given how well the Sonic movies have done, it’s not surprising SEGA and Paramount are planning more. A fourth movie was announced shortly after Sonic 3, and late last year, they revealed a secret Sonic project was also in development. Now, it looks like even more adventures with the blue hedgehog are on the way.

According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Paramount is currently working on a third Sonic movie. Richtman, a well-known source for entertainment news, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a third film in the Sonic Universe is in development.

“Paramount developing a third Sonic Universe movie that hasn’t been announced yet.”

In addition to the already-planned Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (scheduled for theaters on March 19, 2027), Paramount Pictures has also set a release date of December 22, 2028, for a new Sonic Universe movie. A separate streaming project related to the Sonic franchise is also reportedly being developed, as previously reported.

Neither SEGA nor Paramount has officially confirmed or dismissed rumors about a possible third Sonic movie.

What Could Paramount Be Hiding in Its Sonic Movie Plans?

Paramount Pictures appears fully committed to making more Sonic movies, which is exciting news for fans of the character.

Production of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is officially starting this year, and it’s currently slated for release in March 2027. This makes it the Sonic project fans have the most details about so far.

The upcoming movie will follow Sonic and his friends as they team up with a new character, Amy Rose – a pink hedgehog who fights with a hammer. Together, they’ll face a powerful new enemy, Metal Sonic, who appeared briefly in the last movie, Sonic 3, and poses a bigger threat than anything they’ve encountered before.

Rumors indicated that Sonic 4 might be similar to the 1993 game Sonic CD, featuring characters traveling through time to battle a future version of the villainous Doctor Robotnik (again voiced by Jim Carrey) and his robotic forces, the Metal Sonics.

After Sonic 4, the future gets a bit unclear, like the purple water in Chemical Plant Zone. The only other Sonic project with a confirmed release date is a currently unnamed movie, scheduled to hit theaters in December 2028.

As a long-time Sonic fan, I couldn’t help but think this movie might be Paramount’s way of finally giving us a proper crossover film. If you’ve played the games, especially Sonic Heroes from 2003, you know how awesome it is to see all the different characters team up. That game basically brought everyone together to stop Eggman’s latest scheme, and it’s a fan favorite for a reason. It would be incredible to see that energy on the big screen!

There’s a possibility that Paramount and SEGA are working on a Sonic Heroes movie, potentially releasing it in 2028. This seems likely considering the project is being described as an ‘Event Film’.

A third mystery movie and a potential second Sonic TV series are in the works. The movie might be Sonic 5, and the new show could focus entirely on Shadow, following his introduction in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Paramount might also believe the ‘Shadow’ brand could be a huge success. This new film is planned as a full-length ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’ movie, and the TV series could be either another season featuring Idris Elba as Knuckles, or a completely different show.
