Bruce Campbell is famous for starring in beloved cult films, and his fans were thrilled when he returned to his most famous role in the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead. However, despite lasting for three seasons, the show was ultimately cancelled because not enough people were watching. Campbell himself has shared his thoughts on why the series ended.
Despite past challenges, the Evil Dead franchise has continued to thrive, especially with strong reboot films like Evil Dead Rise, which has introduced fresh ideas and exciting new actors. Fans of the original star, Ash Williams, hope Ash vs. Evil Dead will get the recognition it deserves in 2026, and they’re encouraged by the upcoming animated series.
Ash vs. Evil Dead Deserves New Life on HBO Max
The Evil Dead movies and shows are currently spread across different streaming services, but they used to be mostly available on HBO Max, which was really convenient. If the merger between HBO Max and Netflix goes through, it could give the franchise a much bigger audience, reaching more viewers than ever before.
Bruce Campbell has talked about his frustration with Ash vs. Evil Dead being exclusive to Starz, particularly when it was briefly available on Netflix. The show was a hit with viewers for good reason: it featured Sam Raimi, continued the over-the-top, funny horror style of the original, and advanced the story in a satisfying way.
I’d tell people, ‘Hey! Great news! They’re bringing Evil Dead back as a series!’
‘Oh my God! Bruce, that’s great news! What’s it gonna be on?’
‘Starz…’
‘… What’s Starz?’
-Bruce Campbell
Besides criticizing viewers for illegal downloads, Campbell also felt the show wasn’t reaching enough people because it was only on Starz. Having it available on a popular streaming service like HBO Max or Netflix would make it easier for both dedicated fans and new viewers to watch. He specifically thought one particular project would be a perfect fit for a larger platform.
Evil Dead’s Animated Series Deserves the Best Shot Possible
Bruce Campbell has confirmed he’ll reprise his role as the voice of Ash Williams, and this will be the only way to experience the character in future Evil Dead projects, assuming he stays retired from on-screen acting. While it won’t be a direct continuation of Ash vs. Evil Dead, it will serve as a spiritual successor with his involvement, prioritizing a respectful continuation of the character over simply making money from the franchise.
It’s disappointing that we won’t be getting any more episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead. The show was brilliantly over-the-top, combining outrageous violence with hilarious slapstick—from its crude bathroom humor to its incredibly witty dialogue. An animated series capturing the best parts of Evil Dead would be a great fit for HBO Max.
Beyond Bruce Campbell, the show benefited from a fantastic cast, including Ray Santiago, Dana DeLorenzo, Lucy Lawless, and Ted Raimi. Everyone was great in their parts, but Dana DeLorenzo really stood out as the incredibly cool Kelly Maxwell, and she was a major reason people loved the show. Hopefully, these actors will be involved in the upcoming animated series.
