Ralph Fiennes has hinted at who will play Voldemort in the new Harry Potter TV series.
Ever since the young main characters and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape were cast, there’s been a lot of speculation about who will play Lord Voldemort in the series.
Cillian Murphy, known for his role in Oppenheimer, was once thought to be in talks for another part, but he recently confirmed he wasn’t involved.
During a recent interview at an event, Ralph Fiennes, known for playing the famous villain in the movies, seemed to accidentally reveal a secret.
When asked who could play Voldemort in the new HBO series – the character doesn’t actually appear until the fourth Harry Potter book, The Goblet of Fire – Ralph Fiennes simply said, “I’ve been told the role has already been cast.”

When the reporter repeated the question, Ralph replied, “I’ve already stated that I think Cillian Murphy is a talented actor.”
He continued: “Very good. Very good choice. I think they’ve cast it, haven’t they?”
Realizing the actor playing Voldemort hadn’t been announced yet, he said, “I was under the impression they’d already cast that role.”
I’m happy to report we finally have confirmation on the main cast for the new series! After what felt like ages of rumors and guesswork, the three leads were officially announced back in May. It’s good to have that mystery solved and to know who will be carrying the show.

Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will star in the show as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, respectively. They are all new to the production.
McLaughlin was in the Sky comedy series Grow. Stanton is known for his work in musical theatre, including performances in Matilda and Starlight Express in London’s West End. Stout has been featured in television commercials.
The cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (known for her role in Tumbleweeds) as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost (from Shaun of the Dead) as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (of The Fast Show) as Argus Filch.

JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has received criticism for her opinions on transgender rights. In 2020, she published a detailed explanation of her views on sex and gender, which was challenged and refuted by LGBTQ+ organizations like Stonewall.
J.K. Rowling has expressed her opinions on social media, most recently in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter). In that post, she stated her belief that the concept of transgender children is inaccurate and rejected the idea that someone’s gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
In May 2025, J.K. Rowling created the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to provide financial support for legal battles aimed at protecting women’s rights as defined by biological sex.
Stars of the Harry Potter films, like Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, have spoken out against J.K. Rowling’s views and expressed support for the transgender community. Meanwhile, other cast members, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent, have come to Rowling’s defense amid recent criticism.
The Harry Potter series will air on HBO.
