Actor Michael Sheen will be the focus of a new BBC documentary investigating reports of chemical pollution in South Wales, an area where he spent his childhood.
The new series, called Buried, is based on the popular BBC Radio 4 podcast, ‘Buried: The Last Witness.’ It revisits the work of Douglas Gowan, a researcher who exposed dangerously high levels of a toxic chemical leaking from a landfill site in South Wales, near farmland.
Douglas warned that disposing of these chemicals could harm the people of Wales for years to come, but he passed away before anyone listened. Now, his son, Michael, is determined to discover if his father’s concerns were justified.
This series, in two parts, will share the stories of families impacted by the issue, along with insights from local officials, journalists who’ve investigated the environmental concerns, and experts in science and medicine.
David Tennant, famous for playing the angel Aziraphale in ‘Good Omens,’ shared that he first encountered scientist Dr. Chris Gowan about a decade ago, and Gowan’s concerns about certain chemicals have remained with him ever since.
This series explores the hidden realities beneath our communities, giving voice to those impacted and investigating why these issues remained concealed for so long. We’re not just looking for answers, but also considering how our actions today will affect these communities going forward.

Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning for Specialist Factual, and Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning for BBC Cymru Wales, commissioned Buried.
Bootle explained that when he learned how passionate Sheen was about the story, he immediately recognized a chance to make a compelling series that would engage audiences and raise awareness about a critical environmental problem.
Andrews emphasized the significance of the series, highlighting Michael’s strong relationship with the story it tells. He explained that it expands upon their acclaimed podcast and represents a crucial investigation that is likely to surprise many people, in Wales and beyond.
The documentary has been co-produced by Wall to Wall and Smoke Trail Productions.
Buried will air on BBC Two, BBC One Wales and BBC iPlayer.
