The Avengers are known as Earth’s greatest heroes, consistently protecting our planet from dangers both near and far for many years. They’ve repeatedly shown the universe what it means to be truly heroic, with Captain America embodying the core values of justice that the team represents. However, even heroes aren’t flawless. Throughout their history, the Avengers have made errors, and sometimes, writers challenge them by having them act in ways that conflict with their established principles, adding depth and complexity to their stories.
It’s become common for heroes to become villains, even if just for a short time. Many of our favorite heroes have, at some point, strayed into villainous territory. While these turns to the dark side are usually temporary, sometimes they last a long time. We’ve already explored ten Avengers who became villains, and now we’re going to look at seven more heroes who gave in to evil. Let’s dive into the stories of Avengers who sought revenge.
7) Swordsman

The Swordsman has a complicated history with the Avengers. He first joined the team in 1963, but was secretly working for the villain the Mandarin, intending to betray them. Surprisingly, he began to genuinely want to be a hero alongside his teammates. However, his time with the Avengers was cut short when they mistakenly believed he was setting a trap for them. For years after, he wavered between helping and fighting the Avengers. Ultimately, he became a villain working for Kang, but in a final act of redemption, he chose to be a hero, completing a long journey of changing sides.
6) Moondragon

Moondragon is a well-known Avenger with incredible psychic abilities. She began as the villain Madame MacEvil, but eventually joined the team after turning away from evil. However, she remained incredibly arrogant and often acted as if she knew best, even when it went against what the Avengers believed. This led to extreme actions, like mentally controlling an entire planet to force peace and make them worship her, and tragically, killing her own father, Drax the Destroyer, when he opposed her. Though she walked a fine line between hero and villain for a long time, Moondragon ultimately committed to being a true hero after merging with a more virtuous version of herself.
5) Namor

Namor the Sub-Mariner’s time with the Avengers was brief, but his actions definitely qualify him for this list. He began as one of Marvel’s earliest heroes, but his pride and sense of privilege led him down a path towards being an anti-hero, and ultimately, a villain. His worst offenses were against Wakanda – he’s actually destroyed the nation twice. First, he flooded it entirely, and later, he betrayed them to Thanos in a deal to protect Atlantis. Beyond that, Namor has been responsible for thousands of deaths and nearly caused global destruction multiple times, most notably during conflicts with the Fantastic Four. He’s the only character to completely destroy a world, and regardless of his reasons, that’s a definitively villainous act.
4) Ant-Man (Eric O’Grady)

As a long-time comic fan, it feels like Ant-Man’s history is just… complicated. Sure, Hank Pym has had his moments, but the real troubled Ant-Man, in my opinion, is Eric O’Grady. He wasn’t a hero by any stretch – just a regular SHIELD agent who basically stole the Ant-Man suit to make an easy life for himself. It’s interesting because he actually tried to redeem himself, even joining the Secret Avengers and ultimately making a heroic sacrifice. But even that wasn’t enough! These villains, the Descendants, created a robotic copy of him, a Life Model Decoy, and twisted it into this truly nasty villain called Black Ant. It’s a shame, because Black Ant ended up making even Eric’s flawed history look bad.
3) Spider-Man

Spider-Man has surprisingly played the villain role on two occasions, though neither time was his fault. The first involved a body swap with his enemy, Doctor Octopus. When Otto Octavius found himself in Peter Parker’s body, he tried to be a hero, but ended up acting like a supervillain, using Spider-Bots to monitor the city and generally causing trouble. The second time Spider-Man turned evil, he was taken over by the dark side of Norman Osborn, becoming the Spider-Goblin. In this form, he went on a destructive spree, attacking enemies and even threatening MJ’s boyfriend, Paul, before finally being freed from the possession.
2) Daredevil

Daredevil has a history of fighting the Hand, a dangerous ninja group. However, he was once taken over by the demon they serve, called the Beast, and became their leader. While under the Beast’s control, Daredevil built a new base for the Hand in New York City and almost conquered the entire city. He even severely tortured Bullseye, something the real Daredevil would never do. Eventually, Daredevil was freed from the demon’s influence, but witnessing such terrible acts committed by a normally heroic character was deeply disturbing.
1) Quicksilver

Quicksilver is a long-standing member of the Avengers, originally starting as a villain before joining the team alongside his sister, Scarlet Witch. However, he later reverted to his villainous ways during the House of M storyline. While Wanda was held responsible, Quicksilver was actually the one who orchestrated the events. He exploited Wanda’s fragile mental state to reshape reality to his liking, and even after being exposed, he stubbornly defended his actions. Perhaps his most damaging act wasn’t altering the world or manipulating his sister, who desperately needed support, but his refusal to accept responsibility. Even now, many still blame Wanda for House of M, forgetting Quicksilver’s crucial role.
