In HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Egg unexpectedly runs away, and the show suggests this is due to a significant secret. The prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, first introduced viewers to Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, and Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell, in its opening episode. Egg initially meets Duncan at an inn while Duncan is traveling to Ashford Meadows. It’s later revealed that Egg ran away from home and followed Duncan, hoping to become his squire at a jousting tournament.
I’ve been completely captivated by Egg! It’s becoming increasingly clear there’s a lot more to him than we initially thought. In the first episode, he casually mentioned that if Duncan took him home, it would be all the way to King’s Landing – a huge distance! And then he hinted he wasn’t from Flea Bottom, which makes me wonder if he’s actually from a noble family and incredibly far from his real home. It’s all so intriguing!
The character Egg has a hidden past, which explains why he left home, as revealed in George R.R. Martin’s novella, The Hedge Knight. If the HBO series follows the book closely, Egg will be shown to be from a very important family – the Targaryens, who are the most powerful in the Seven Kingdoms.

As shown in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Egg clearly prefers a simple life and doesn’t desire the responsibilities of royalty. Right from the start, he asks Duncan to take him on as a squire, specifically because Duncan is a low-ranking knight, not a nobleman. Throughout the second episode, Egg enjoys everyday activities like playing tug-of-war, watching a puppet show, and camping with Duncan near Ashford Meadows.
I truly believe Egg made the right choice serving someone with nothing – no family, no wealth, no powerful friends. It’s actually why he left in the first place! He wanted a simple life, to see the real world, not just be surrounded by the privileges of being royal. He craved something authentic, and I admire him for it.
If the show stays true to the original story, we’ll find out that Egg doesn’t get along well with his family and longs for independence. Despite being a prince, he’s so far from the throne that he has virtually no chance of becoming king, which is a major reason he ran away. He doesn’t want to be stuck at King’s Landing, confined and protected – he craves a free life, knowing he’ll likely never be king.
Egg was desperate to leave with anyone who would take him. Duncan wasn’t remarkable, but as a hedge knight without noble connections, he was an easy target. Egg intentionally sought him out, knowing Duncan wouldn’t guess his true identity as a Targaryen.
Over the next few episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we’ll probably find out more about Egg – where he came from, why he left home, and what he hopes to achieve. If the series follows the books, Egg’s history will become a key part of the story, giving viewers a deeper understanding of his character.
How Long Will Egg’s Secret Be Kept?

Egg’s hidden past and decision to leave his family are major focuses of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and viewers are probably curious about how long it will take for the other characters—particularly Dunk—to discover his true identity.
If the new Game of Thrones prequel stays true to the source material, Duncan will eventually discover secrets about Egg’s history and will need to decide how that changes their relationship. The first two episodes establish Duncan as a very honorable and honest man—much like Jon Snow—so it’s likely he’ll always choose the right path, even if it doesn’t help him personally.
HBO might alter the story from the original books, similar to what they did with House of the Dragon. While Egg’s path is pretty clear in the books, the show’s creators could take his character in a new direction if they believe it would make for a more captivating narrative.
With the Targaryens now gathered at Ashford Meadows in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and Duncan—whose fate is already known to viewers of Game of Thrones—meeting them all, a major confrontation seems likely to happen quickly.
